Bacchus Competition Names Tasting Panel for 2015 Contest

 


In the true spirit of the Greek god for which the event is named, the 13th annual Bacchus International Wine Competition has named its panel of tasters, a list which includes wine wizards well-versed in the art of imbibing.
 
The conference, which will take place March 19-23 in Madrid sent out a press release this past week detailing the names of some of the events catadores.
 
“An international 'dream team' led by prestigious professionals … in what adds up to another year of a panel of the most important purchasers in Europe and Asia,” the release said, “and other personalities no less relevant like Master Sommeliers, editors from the most important publications specialized in the international wine scene and delegates of the leading viticultural institutions.”
 
The tasting panel will include a quartet of tasters from the United Kingdom: Sarah Je Evans, John Salvi, Demetri Walters and Andrew Howard.
 
This isn't Evans' first run at the Bacchus conference – she's made an appearance on the panel several times and is well known in the wine world as a lover of Spanish reds, whites, sparklers and fortifieds.
 
Her fellow countryman John Salvi has also been a panel judge at the event multiple times.
 
Walters, another British judge and Master of Wine, told food and drink website Tasting Britain this past  year he prefers Madeira, a wine from Portugal, not Spain.
“I enjoy a mature Madeira very much and am a member of (a) Madeira club,” he said. “We taste 8-10 wines invariably 50-200 years old before we lunch together.”
 
The Bacchus tasting panel will also include Spanish taster Pedro Ballesteros, Swiss expert Madeleine Stenwreth, Brazilian Dirceu Vianna Jr., German judge Caro Maurer and Americans Nicholas Paris and Robin Kick. All of these judges are Masters of Wine.
 
According to the Masters of Wine website, both Kick and Paris earned their Master of Wine designation this past year.
 
“No other event in Spain of this scope is able to must during its four days this cast of expert tasters that make up the panel of judges at Bacchus,” the event's website said. “More than one hundred names add their professionalism and diversity of background.”
 
According to Bacchus' site, winemakers can enter their products into the competition beginning March 11. Registration forms are available on the competition's website.
