Alban Syrah Edna Valley Reva Alban Estate Vineyard 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: The 2013 Syrah Reva sports an inky color as well as notes of crème de cassis, charred earth, licorice, wood smoke and just hints of the classic iodine and seaweed character that really defines this cuvee. Supple, seamless, silky and opulent, with sweet, sweet tannin and a silky finish. It shows more and more spice with time in the glass, is incredibly polished, layered and balanced. Drink it anytime over the coming 15-20 years. (8/10/17)

Winemaker John Alban is credited with being one of the first Californians to plant the Rhone varietals Viognier, Rousanne, and Syrah in 1989. His successful pioneering efforts led the way for the California Rhone Ranger movement and have since been a significant source for these varietals for other winemakers and his own Alban Vineyards label. He sources Mourvedre and Grenache from Paso Robles where hotter conditions are more conducive to growing those grapes. Apart from white and red single varietal releases and blends, Alban also produces a dessert wine with botrytis grapes called Rotten Luck. Read less

Good but not worth the cost. Would save for the single vineyards or go with other producers

[Cafe Le Haye] Great bottle; one of the best American Syrahs I ve taste. Expansive nose of blackberry, violet, bacon, and meat; developed some chocolate. Sweet fruit and tannins on the palate. Also great the next day. Bought more

This is my second bottle of the "Reva". The first was much more impressive. Note: The first bottle was just opened and did not decant. Second bottle was partially decanted. This, I believe, made and ENORMOUS difference! I went back to the bottle because I prefer the bigger bolder style that initially made this wine win my heart. Still impeccably made, the lush mouth feel wasn't as apparent; still it seems to be aging well, the fruit was still there just a bit softer.

Reveals layers and layers of rich black fruit, blackberry and boysenberry. Dark purple color with long legs. Unctuous, viscous and lush. Smooth tannins with a powerful midpalate and greeat complexity. Cedar, spicebox, leather and chocolate all intertwined. Extremely well integrated...a beautiful wine.

A superb offering from the Reva Vineyard, the 2004 Syrah (12,000 bottles produced) boasts a blue/black/purple color in addition to gorgeous aromas of blackberry liqueur, creosote, graphite, and a hint of smoky oak. It is an intense, dense, stunning effort with huge tannin as well as a full-bodied, long finish.
