You’ll find the region’s signature style blended into every bottle. As a grape-growing region, Sonoma County is like no other place on earth. With redwood forests, benchlands, hillsides, and nearly 80 miles of majestic coastline, Sonoma offers a wide variety of microclimates, soils, and terrain. This uniquely diverse region supports several different grape varieties but is best known for its lush Merlots and full-bodied Cabernets. Sonoma County is a designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) made up of thirteen distinctly different World-Class wine growing appellations. Each appellation and each vineyard within that appellation contributes something special - it is from this vibrant flavor palate that complex, expressive wines emerge. At Blackstone, we find Sonoma County inspiring. Each different AVA contributes something unique and special to the final blend. Our Sonoma Reserve wines, in particular, exemplify Sonoma’s signature style, and help set the standard carried through to our Winemaker’s Select wines. “Sonoma County is one of the most amazing places in the world to live and make wine,” observes Winemaker Gary Sitton. “There’s no place like it. The immense diversity—from the coastline to the mountains, valleys, and rivers—still leaves me in awe. For me, tapping into this range of growing conditions is fundamental to making beautifully expressive wines from Sonoma County.” From the start, our goal has been to produce smooth, flavorful, harmonious wines with rich fruit, supple texture, and balanced oak. Early on, this approach found its ideal expression in our Merlot, which soon became — and still remains — America’s favorite Merlot. Our Winemaker’s Select wines are sourced from premier growing regions throughout California, each meticulously selected to contribute certain nuances to the final blend. We source grapes for our 2008 Chardonnay from vineyards in Monterey County where temperatures and soil are ideal for growing Chardonnay grapes. Carefully selected fruit from various micro-climates highlight natural acidity and layers of flavor. The 2008 Chardonnay is an accessible, balanced wine with rich varietal character.In 2008, the winter was dry and cool. Bud break began in late March and throughout May the vines began to flower and bloom. Harvest began in late August and continued steadily until early fall. The vintage yielded a small harvest with high quality fruit, concentrated flavors and vibrant acidity. Grapes were night harvested, destemmed and gently crushed to extract the utmost flavor from the fruit. Individual vineyard lots were pressed, followed by 30% of the blend undergoing malolactic fermentation. Following fermentation, the wine spent eight months aging in French and American oak barrels, which contributed layers of complexity and flavor.Our 2008 Blackstone Chardonnay is a bright wine with a zesty lemon citrus nose and layers of concentrated fruit flavors. The Monterey County fruit used for this blend contributes components of pineapple and peach followed by a hint of vanilla and crème brulée in the finish.
