Château Paloumey Red Bordeaux Blend Haut-Médoc Ailes de Paloumey 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Martine Cazeneuve took over this down-at-heel property in 1990 and has worked wonders, exploiting its wonderful site on the gravel slopes of Plate de la Lagune. The Château was well known before the Second World War and was classified as a cru bourgeois supérieur in 1932. But after the war the wine estate fell into less interested hands and when Martine bought it there was not a single vine left. Much hard sweat and toil paid off when in June 2003 the Château regained its classification. from the beginning, Martine took an ambitious stand: to follow a strict Grand Cru policy and make wines which had the potential of becoming one of the finest of the appellation. "Gorgeous black currant on the nose, with tar and lead pencil. Pauillac-like. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Serious."-J.S.Wine Spectator. "Very dark purple. Very fragrantly floral. A little muted on the palate but could certainly give pleasure in a low-key way. Nicely appetising in dry minerals style rather than over-the-top sweetness. Though a bit painful on the finish." Jancis Robinson

Not going to blow your socks off, but a nice 2000 Bordeaux at a decent price.

With a blend that is half Cabernet Sauvignon, half Merlot, this is as rich as the year. The weight of fruit is borne by sweet tannins and layers of wood toast. There is a very dense dusty texture along with fine acidity and final blackberry fruit. It is for aging over the next 4–5 years.

This has a nice warm feel, with plush roasted coffee bean, steeped plum and fig fruit flavors melding through the tobacco-filled finish. Drink now through 2017.
