Costa Graia Piglio Superiore 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

"Costa Graia is composed of seven hectares of vineyards south of Rome. All the grapes cultivated are indigenous to the area: Cesanese d'Affile, Passerina, Uvapane, Ottonese, Nostrano, and Fosco Peloso. Their territory was the first DOCG area of Latium (Cesanese del Piglio). The farming is organic and every effort is paid in the winery to intervene as little as possible. 2013 is the first commercial release." -Importer

The hills stretching from Montefi ascone to Orvieto are partly volcanic partly sedimentary in origin and both kinds of soil are particularly suited to the growing of vines as witnessed by the century-old tradition of the zone. In his book The foreign varietals cultivated in Italy S. Mondini affirms that as early as the 19th century several foreign varietals were cultivated in Lazio, some in quite remarkable proportions and specialized in the vineyards... Cabernet, Carignane, Gamay, Grenache, Merlot, Malbeck, Pinot, Sauvignon, Syrah... Lazio generally proves to be an area where the advantages from the cultivation of the foreign varietals are remarkable, especially for what concerns the ones coming from France.. In the countryside surrounding Rome, Frosinone and Viterbo it’s widely held that they contribute to the improvement of the local wine production. Read less
