In 1320, Pope Jean XXII had the first vines planted in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. But only in 1360 did the vine acquire a certain importance, first with the white wine drunk by Innocent VI, then with red wine; but these products remained little known. Only from the 18th century onward, did the vine occupy the territory and papal wine begin to be famous. In the Jaume family, the generations have perpetuated the profession of winegrower since Mathieu JAUME decided, in 1826, to grow vines in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. The successions were assumed by Marius, Fernand and Roger. In 1979, Alain and Odile JAUME carried on the family tradition with the creation of the GRAND VENEUR WINERY. At the beginning, the vineyard extended over 22 acres. Over time, the vineyard grew to today's figure of nearly 135 acres spread in the CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE, LIRAC, CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES "Les Champauvins", and CÔTES DU RHÔNE areas. In 2003, a new estate of 35 acres was acquired: the "CLOS DE SIXTE" Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée LIRAC. This appellation located 10 kilometres from Châteauneuf du Pape, is one of the thirteen Crus of the Rhône Valley. Over the years, the family has grown, too. Today, Sébastien and Christophe are gradually taking charge of the management of the estate. Sharing the family know-how, they have to put to maximum advantage their knowledge in wine-growing and wine-tasting. Read less

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines may turn out to be one of this estate's finest cuvées, although one should not overlook the 2006 Les Origines. A luxury cuvée sold at a reasonable price, the 2007 boasts a dense blue/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of blueberries, charcoal, creme de cassis, graphite, smoked meats, and herbs. Dense, full-bodied, and exceptionally pure, with a multilayered texture, moderate tannin, and a stunning finish, it will benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 20-25.

Both of Grand Veneur's bottled 2001 Châteauneuf du Papes are outstanding efforts... The top offering, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée Les Origines exhibits an even more saturated ruby/purple color as well as glorious aromas of acacia flowers, blackberries, licorice, chocolate, and kirsch liqueur. With fabulous richness and purity, medium to full body, undeniable elegance for its size, and a long, textured, multidimensional finish, it is the finest Les Origines Alain Jaume has yet produced. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016.

This is broad-shouldered, with lots of dark olive, fig, currant and beef flavors supported by tarry tannins that show excellent drive through the finish, where extra raspberry and graphite notes linger. Drink now through 2020.

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines is one of the vintage's most profound wines. Inky purple to the rim, showing some subtle influence of barriques, the wine has an impressive nose of chocolate, smoke, roasted meats, blueberries, and jammy black cherries with some licorice and smoke. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, but has silky tannins and good acidity. This wine should be drinkable upon release and last for 15 or more years.

Deep, bright red. Very ripe aromas of cassis, espresso, smoked meat and animal fur. Lush, fleshy and concentrated; supersweet grenache-dominated flavors of cherry and plum. Creamy but lively and elegant. Finishes long and firm, but turned a tad dry with aeration, showing menthol and herbal elements.

Rich but pure, with lovely crushed plum and violet aromas followed by layers of mesquite, roasted vanilla, melted licorice and pastis. Long and very silky through the finish. Still quite primal now, but should evolve nicely. Best from 2010 through 2022.

The 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Origines (50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 20% Syrah aged in small new oak barrels) is somewhat of an anomaly with such an amount of new oak, but it never seems to show given the wine's concentration and richness. This may be the estate's finest example of this cuvée, which generally represents 1,200-1,500 cases, all from their holdings in the northern sector of the appellation. A saturated purple color is accompanied by aromas of smoke, camphor, créme de cassis, licorice, and blueberries, amazing concentration, a full-bodied texture, and a stunningly long finish. The tannins are present, but silky, and the vintage's freshness and vibrant fruit are evident. Powerful and loaded with substance, but at the same time endearingly elegant and ethereal, it will benefit from another 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 15+.
