Francis Coppola Zinfandel Diamond Series Red Label 2013

Member Review by zinfandel1:

Can't believe a Zin at this price delivers so much. Has all the key elements that makes a Zin what it is. However, I believe it is the Petite Sirah that gives it the backbone that makes it so good. A great everyday Zin and an essential wine for your outdoor grilling.

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

Dark ruby color. On the nose lot's of cherries, plum, smoked meat, licorice. On the palate dry, fruity, ripe blackberries, vanilla, spices. Soft tannins, little unusual noticeable acidity, but balances good with jammy, syrupy flavors of this wine. Long, lush finish.

Nice garnet color. Black cherry, pepper and raspberry nose. Spicy but with good black fruits. Decent length on the finish. Not bad.

Comparable to the St. Francis Old Vines Zin from Sonoma County. Coppola knows how to get a wine done properly. Director's cut rocks the under $20 Zin bin. Funny thing is, Rosenblum gets it done for half the price!

It's wrong those grapes percentages: Blend: 92% Zinfandel, 6% Petite Sirah and 2% Primitivo

Alluring, easy-drinking Zin with vivid California flavors of fruit and spice, made for everyday enjoyment. Sourced from 'old vines' in Amador County and cooler vineyards in Paso Robles and Sonoma, our Zinfandel has exceptional depth and complexity. Petite Sirah is blended in to further enhance the luscious strawberry jam, cassis and briar flavors that follow its perfume of dark fruit, sweet spice and toasty vanilla.

Winemaker's NotesOur Diamond Collection Zinfandel is crafted by blending fruit from several different appellations, which feature different clone selections, soil types and cultivation methods. We source both hot and cool climate Paso Robles fruit as well as fruit from Sonoma County. By combining these different styles of Zinfandel, we achieve a wine of greater complexity and character. 2009 was an excellent vintage that experienced a mild spring, warm summer weather and no abrupt climate changes at season's end. These conditions resulted in profusely aromatic fruit with exceptional weight and balance. We also added an extra layer of complexity by blending in a small amount of Petite Sirah. The resulting wine has a solid structure and mature tannins, which balance Zinfandel's inherently jammy nature. - WineryTasting ProfileAppearance: Red-violetAromas: Crushed raspberries, strawberries, toasted oakFlavors: Briary blackberries, plums, pepper, cloves and colaAppella...

Aromas are dominated by inviting ripe, red currants with exotic spice overtones. The palate is soft, concentrated, and filled with luscious black currants.

A fun Zinfandel that's jammy and juicy, with aromas of blackberry cobbler and spice and ripe flavors that offer just enough complexity to keep this interesting. Drink now.
