Franciscan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Sensory evaluation: Appearance: Deep ruby Aromas: Pretty and complex with layers of ripe, juicy blackberry that weave together with savory notes of black peppercorn and rosemary into a multi-faceted and beautiful nose. Flavors: Dense and dark with layers of dark forest fruits, anise, and toasty notes of oak and baking spice. Rich and well-structured with a generous mouthfeel and supple tannins. Finishes long and smooth with flavors of black currant. Winemaker’s notes: At Franciscan Estate, 200 individual lots of red wine are made during the vintage, each representing a unique combination of vineyard block and barrel type. This is our winemaking philosophy—crafting small lots to capture the best expression of the grapes each year. The Winemaker’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a very special blend to make because it allows us to choose some of our favorite lots of the vintage that show outstanding richness and personality and create a unique, limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon blend. —Janet Myers, Winemaker Growing season: 2014 was another early harvest for Napa Valley. Another low-rainfall year led to excellent flavor intensity and beautiful ripeness in the fruit. The winter started off very dry with no rain in December, January, or February. Near the end of March and into the first part of April, we received a good dose of rain that started the vines growing with ample water in the root zone. Throughout a majority of the season the ripening conditions were text book normal. The Cabernet Sauvignon for this blend was selected from a vineyard in Oak Knoll that we have been sourcing fruit from for over 15 years. The vineyard, on the west side of the valley, gives us outstanding density with supple, fine-grain tannins. This Clone 4 block of Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on October 4 and blended with Merlot from just north of the Cabernet Sauvignon block, also in Oak Knoll, as well as a touch of Petit Verdot off of our Oakville Estate vineyard. Each varietal gives added layers of depth and richness to this wine. Varietal Composition: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Merlot 5% Petit Verdot Fermentation: Pre-fermentation cold soak of four days to enhance color and body. Fermentation and maceration averaging 22 days to build structure and integrate mouthfeel. Aging: 20 months in small French oak barrels; 94% once-used French oak and 6% new French oak. pH: 3.76 TA: 6 g/L Alcohol: 14.5%
