Merlot. Gato Negro 2016

Member Review by rhill2990:

I was served this wine at a restaurant last evening. It was a very enjoyable experience. It had a nice garnet color. It was smooth with a pleasing aroma. I confess I had a couple of tequila's before I tasted it. Overall a very nice experience.

Founded in 1865, Viña San Pedro figures among the largest and oldest Chilean wine exporters and is one of the country’s most important wineries, with presence in more than 80 markets on all five continents with its brands Cabo de Hornos, 1865 Single Vineyard, Castillo de Molina, 35°South, and GatoNegro. This wide brand portfolio allows it to target a great variety of consumers throughout the world. San Pedro’s main plantations, the winery and the centenary underground cellar are located in Molina, at the Curicó Valley, 200 Km south from Santiago. An area gifted with gentle rolling hills and frank soils on volcanic tuff, with privileged climatic and geographical conditions for grape-growing. Here, San Pedro owns one of the largest continuous areas of vineyards in South America, with 1,200 hectares. But besides this, San Pedro counts with more than 1,500 hectares planted all along the Central Valley and in other Chile’s main viticulture valleys, such as Elqui, Casablanca, San Antonio-Leyda, Maipo, Cachapoal, Maule and Bío-Bío, being always in search of new and better origins and flavors for its wines. Today, VSPT is the second largest Chilean wine exporter and stands at the first place of the fine wine’s segment in the domestic market. Read less

I was skeptical how a wine this inexpensive would taste, but was content with it. Had this without food and it wasn't harsh, but not as smooth as the Bogle petite shiraz.

Soft and smooth. Simple cherry and berry flavors are clean and fresh in this straightforward red. It has light tannins and good balance. Drink now.

Big, awkward aromas of red fruit and oak are followed by simple berry and plum flavors and even more overt oak. The finish is big and warm, while late in the game the wine turns tangy. This is one of many mass-market Merlots with few glaring faults; but still it fights to rise above basic acceptability.
