Murphy-Goode California Chardonnay 2015

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Medium intensity aromas of beeswax/honeycomb, green apple and peach with cream. Bracingly acidic in the mouth and pronounced flavors of honey butter, melon find and a petrol note through the middle. Fine fruit of green apple and pear with a tart lemon finish.

At Murphy-Goode, winemaking isn’t just a family busness; it’s a family tradition – one that’s endured since its founding in 1985 by friends Tim Murphy, Dale Goode and Dave Ready, and lives on in its current owners, the Jackson family. It’s a tradition based on a shared appreciation of friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Although currently more Bordeaux focused, in the early days of Murphy-Goode “a good bottle of wine” meant one of two things: Fumé Blanc or Chardonnay, both made with grapes harvested entirely from Murphy Ranch and Murphy-Goode Vineyard. But as the popularity of their wine grew, so did the need for additional vineyards. The solution? Simply bring more friends into the fold by creating partnerships with local farmers and neighbors who shared the Murphy-Goode vision. In the summer of 2006, one such neighbor, friend and fellow winemaker Jess Jackson, displayed such a strong belief in this vision that he purchased Murphy-Goode. The winery is still very much a family-oriented operation today, with the Murphys retaining their original vineyards and David Ready, Jr., son of one of the original founders, continuing on as Murphy-Goode’s winemaker. Though now, of course, they create more than just Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. In fact in recent years, as newly planted vineyards have come into production, the winery’s focus has shifted from primarily white wine to distinctive reds – particularly Bordeaux blends produced from grape varieties that excel in the Alexander Valley. And so the tradition continues: friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Read less

Crisp apple pie and crumb cake aromas with vanilla ice cream and a touch of peach. This is a dry wine but has some perceived sweetness from the white grape and peach flavors, slight autolytic yeastiness and oaky vanilla notes. A fun, fresh and fruity Chardonnay that is fairly simple but nice.

Green apple and caramel aromas are light and clean. Flavors of honey and cream, light honeydew melon and almond. A fresh and light, easy-drinking Chard.

Medium bodied almost french style california chard. Great value wine. Buttery and french vanilla taste but a real interesting aroma.

Graceful Chardonnay, soft in the mouth but with attractive peach, lemon, and vanilla flavors, subtle spiciness, and enough balancing acidity to keep it fresh and interesting. Because of its unaggressive structure, this is a good apertif wine, though it also pairs well with food. As with virtually all Murphy-Goode wines we've tried, fairly priced.

Grapes were selected from Alexander Valley, Russian River and Dry Creek appellations to craft this Chardonnay. Fresh tropical fruit aromas are complemented by a subtle lees complexity. The palate is satisfyingly full with flavors of ripe pears, honey and vanilla bean spice.
