Piccini Supertuscan Blend Toscana IGT Sasso Al Poggio 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Decidedly earthy with rather intense leather, beef, hickory, sage and cranberry aromas. Light and fresh in the mouth, this delivers bright cranberry and raspberry fruit supported by soft tannins and lively acids that really perk up the back end. The fruit takes on more of a cherry character before adding some stemmy herb tones and revealing a nice tannic bite on the finish, which is fairly long. Appealing old school Chianti. 87pts

Piccini:
Our story begins in 1882 with Angiolo Piccini, from a small family enterprise of only 7ha. Guided only by passion for winemaking, from him the next generations inherited the most important rule in Piccini winemaking, Now we have 4 estates and we are one of the most recognized brands of Tuscan wine in the world.

Sharp acidic nose, while dry and structured on palate. Quite good for a young wine.

A bit too acidic for my tastes. Tart, dark berries, plums, rhubarb, bitter chocolate. Meh.

"What we are actually talking about here is a five quid wine. Not a security-protected, £10.99 bottle, unless you are unfortunate or stupid enough to buy it during the rare periods when it is not reduced. A wine which every year sells for £5, or thereabouts. A little knowledge which, frankly, changed my whole perspective." Read the full review on www.sedimentblog.com

The Piccini Chianti Reserva was very much a disappointment. It had the effect of a very inexpensive bottle of wine, although it was on sale at over £5 (originally over £10). It tasted unimpressive but left me with a bad hangover.

Awful - avoid! Bought a bottle of the 2008 Riserva 1/2 price- better off selling it as wine vinegar. Can't believe that people would pay £10 for it. Amazing it's labelled DOCG and on top of the "Riserva" label, you do wonder how this piss slipped thru the Italian wine quality control system if such a system exists
