I like the ripe-feeling texture of this wine, along with the balance and sense of life the wine shows in the mouth. However, as I found also in a recent tasting of the 2009 Alamos Malbec, the fruit intensity (banana, pear, apple, caramel) is relatively weak and unexciting. Pleasant enough, but nothing to go out of your way for.

There were only about 280 cases made of this excellent Zinfandel, which is exceptionally soft and elegant despite its alcohol level. Very ripe and full in its aromas and flavors without being raisiny or hot. Strong plum compote and cocoa flavors dominate, with subtle spiciness and floral notes. Its softness detracts slightly from its grip, but this Zin has plenty of flavor and length.

If there's a doubt in your mind that top Zinfandels can stand with the world's best wines, you just need to try this one. (Of course at $50/bottle or more, it had better be good.). This wine has tremendous power and richness yet is beautifully balanced and in control. Deep, complex nose starts with raspberry compote, currants, chocolate, charcoal, spice, but over time a whole range of dark berries and savory spices floats through. In the mouth, there is some detectable heat from the alcohol when the wine is first opened, but this quickly disappears into the ocean of flavor. Despite its density, it doesn't come across as heavy or clumsy in the mouth, but rather regal and seamless. It actually goes very well with rich main courses. Spectacular Zinfandel.

Soft, flavorful, fairly-priced, though somewhat routine Chardonnay. Lots of subtle notes in the nose and flavors - spiced apple, brown butter, caramel, dry straw, almonds. Smooth and eminently drinkable and pleasant, just lacking a tad of intensity and pep to be rated higher.

This excellent Chardonnay is available for a song ($7.99) at Costco. Crisp yet full of flavor, it tastes like a Chardonnay priced three times higher. Expressive nose of apricot, pear, and citrus oil. In the mouth, fresh and refreshing and displaying satisfying lemon drop and spice notes. Not dull or clumsy or sweet in the mouth like many inexpensive Chardonnays. Nice finish, too

In 2007 the Damaris Reserve blend was predominantly (89%)from the Sangiacomo vineyard in Carneros, with the remainder from the Lorenzo vineyard in the Russian River. This is a beautifully proportioned and satisfying Chardonnay, long in the mouth and finish. Classic scents and flavors of peach and pear fruit, nutmeg spiciness, roasted cashews, lees, and butter. Nice sense of crispness and precision. Pricey but excellent.

The nose of this Costco brand wine is promising and has some energy, with lime, pear, peach, and a nice dose of spiciness. In the mouth and finish, though, it feels diluted, and relatively flat and uninteresting. The finish also fades quickly. An OK quaffer for the price, but definitely two levels below the quality of Edna Valley (same price at Costco) or Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve, for example.

Extremely pleasant and appealing Chardonnay from a winery that's had some low moments in the past few years. Very clean, fresh, flavorful, balanced Chardonnay that displays plenty of citrus and pineapple-like fruitiness, a nice dose of minerals in the mouth, and some subtle oaky toastiness in the finish. Smooth, crisp, and full, yet untiring to the palate - classy.
