Does drinking white wine at room temperature bring out the aromas and flavors more than drinking it chilled?

So lately we have been tasting some Chardonnay, all at room temperature. I know I (and a lot of others) prefer to drink white wine chilled to the right temperature.

However, I have noticed since drinking them "warm" that the aromas are more pungent and the palette is a bit easier to distinguish between each wine.



  • I've heard of this before, and I have definitely noticed a difference in taste and aromas between chilled and room temperature in every wine I've tasted like this. I actually prefer all of my wines at room temperature now - I just think they're more enjoyable to drink.

  • Warm will certainly present more by way of aromas and flavors. It is easy to understand how quite a number of people would prefer it that way for no other reason. Even so, I like them chilled. Some, I like chilled to the bone, in fact. Where I live, summers are brutal. Dinner with cold shrimp or other seafood, a salad, and an ice cold Muscadet is just pretty great. On the other hand, overcooling a good Sauvignon Blanc is a waste. But I admire your logical and rational preference.
