If (when) you get stuck at home during a hurricane, what wine would you drink for 3 days straight?

I'm looking to stock up now so that I don't have to worry about the next few days - what wine should I get, either a varietal or even a particular brand? I'm thinking at least something that's not so tannic that it must be paired with something else. My choice would be a Sauvignon Blanc.

  • ha, hadn't think about the power outage part of it. So definetly red.  My favorite is usually Cabernet so I guess a bottle of that will do.  But  in light of the potential disasters outside, with floods and wins threathening my modest collection, I say drink the most expensive wine you have.  Life as we know it may come to an end so why keep waiting for that special ocassion.  Drink it while you can and enjoy it.

  • I'd go with light, fresh reds like gamay or pelaverga so you dont have to worry about keeping anything chilled with no power!

    • 455797Kyle Graynor I actually often prefer my whites slightly colder than room temp, not chilled. I think they're much more flavorful that way. That said, a fresh red would be nice too!

  • I live right in Irene's path.  We've been preparing the wine store all day.  (Securing the wine, taping windows, raising bottles off the floor...)  I am going to get some reds to drink as I will be stuck inside for days with my five children with my inlaws.  My husband is an emergency manager for the state, so he won't be around with me.  My mother in law has already told me to bring plenty of good wine!

    • 455797Kyle Graynor Wow, stay safe! And thanks for the tips (My wine is a little precariously perched, I'm going to at least take some precautions).

    • 602268ScottLauraH Thank you... I hope we will be fine!

  • It was undecided, but that has ended...I have popped open this lovely, berry-rich Antano 2007 Tempranillo (Rioja) that is the most divine wine to be sipping in anticipation of Ms. irene.

Next up on the list (and better drink it before the power goes out) is the Hugel Gewurtztraminer....a "special occasion" wine that has been waiting for Irene's arrival...
