Cafayate, the most famous region within the Salta in Argentina, is situated within the Calchaquies Valley. The region is not only known for its exceptional wines produced in high-altitude locales, but also the spectacular mountain views that surround it and attract visitors. Grape-growing benefits from warm days and cool nights, plus melting runoff from the mountains and a decent amount of rainfall. Bordeaux oenologist  Michel Rolland is credited for bringing the spotlight to the region and promoting quality viticulture within it.
Malbec is of course, the shining star of reds, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tannat. Whites are produced most commonly with Torrontes, known for its perfumed aroma, fruity palette and refreshing, balanced acidity. Chardonnay is also grown here.

  • El Porvenir Amauta Absoluto Tannat 2014

Binny's 11/17 and 1/31/2018. Tannat is just a great varietal. This particular bottle comes from Argentina, I had a special one from Uruguay a couple years ago, but have I have had trouble finding another from that country. This is a close look a like. Read More

  • Michel Torino Shiraz Don David Reserve 2011

Fairly fragrant, with lots of blackberry, raspberry and an undertone of something herbaceous. On the palate this one is JUICY, with lots of blackberry, cassis and jam. Also some clove and just a hint of something leathery. Lots of bright acidity. Some lovely subtle notes of vanilla and oak on the finish. Moderate length. Good value here, for sure. Read More

  • Dona Paula Estate Torrontes 2011

Interesting torrontes from Argentina. Perfume on the nose, orange/tangerine paraffin (?) on the mid palate, medium to low acid and a short to medium finish. Quite an interesting white wine that may be a bit over the top for some. Read More

  • Doña Paula Torrontés Cafayate Estate 2011

I am so out of my depth with white wines I had to look up on Google what sort of grape this is, and I found that it's native to Argentina and typically displays some smooth mouthfeel and mild acidity with aromatics of peach and apricot. And sure enough, there are some lovely floral notes to this wine, and some earthy notes that just bring to m... Read More
