Margaret River is a wine region located in Western Australia. Because the majority of that state is too warm for viticulture, the area, also known as South West Australia, is where the wine regions are clustered due to its coastal climate influences. John Gladstone is credited for surveying Margaret River in the 1960s and recommending it as a potential high quality grape-growing region.
Cape Naturaliste, Cape Leeuwin, the Indian Ocean and Geographe Bay all contribute to the Mediterranean growing conditions that favor the more refined “European” style wines for which Margaret River is known. Unlike the big “fruit salads” produced in other parts of the country, Cabernets and Merlots are more akin to Bordeaux, Shiraz is earthy and gamey like that of the Rhone, Chardonnay is balanced and minerally, Chenin Blancs resemble those of the Loire Valley in dryness and the Sauvignon Blancs and Semillons take on a more grassy appeal.
Semillon, as in the Hunter Valley, is the star varietal Read more »
