Cotes du Forez is an appellation created in the year 2000 for red and rose wines made of the gamay grape from 17 communes between the Loire and Allier rivers. It is the most upstream and most southerly of all the Loire appellations located on the eastern edge of the Massif Central of which the Forez hills are a part. The largest town in the appellation is Montbrison. In spite of covering a fairly large area there are only 150 hectares under vine 9 producers and one co=operative. The history of viticulture here goes back to at least the medieval era when it was associated with religious orders.

  • Verdier-Logel Cotes du Forez la Volcanique 2007

    Snoothrank:

Reminds me of Cherry Dr. Pepper through a granite straw, just not as sweet. Named appropriately, the terroir is very expressive across the nose and palate. The alcohol is a little high for a typical Gamay, 12%, but this is not your typical Gamay.Interesting for a Gamay, but definitely not world class; however, a good, interesting buy at $14 a ... Snoothrank:

I once had a pompous boyfriend who made a Very Big Deal about the release of Beaujolais nouveau every year. Say it with me, W h a t e v e r ...The Volcanique is a truly impressive expression of Gamay. White pepper tickles your mouth while humble raspberry and woody herbs round out the finish. Read More
