Graves Wine

Graves

Graves is an appellation created in 1937 for red and white wines from 44 communes south of the city of Bordeaux, south of the Medoc. It is a very important part of the Bordeaux region The name refers to its gravelly soil. The Medoc was just a swamp and it was Graves that produced the best wines of the region until the Dutch drained the Medoc in the 17th century. The region is known for white wines, especially (but not only) botrytized dessert-style ones like Sauternes, but is also home to Haut-Brion, one of the original First Growths, and, in fact, produces more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated reds than whites.

  • Chateau la Garde Pessac-Leognan Blanc 2007

    Snoothrank:

  • Chateau Olivier Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

Chateau Olivier (Blanc/White) is a consistent, high quality Bordeaux; Its flavour profile - beginning with the nose of gooseberry on a bed of fresh, summer grass (unmown) and a hint of sugared kiwi fruit, entry is soft with sweet straw, more gooseberry and pure spring water. Finish is slightly stalky, medium and herbaceous. Great value wine. 92. Read More

  • Clos Floridene Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

Clos Floridene is a good, sauvignon blanc based wine from Graves, and is about right for consumption now. There is the muted herbaceous nose and entry followed by the usual rich finish of white fruit. Drink now or until 2020. 90. Read More

  • Chateau Brown Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 Chateau Brown is filled with nuts and apricot on the nose and entry; there is a hint of apricot preserve on the palate and a deep, apricot-peach finish with a hint of sweetness and musk. Drink now. 89. Read More

  • Clos Floridene Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

The 2015 edition of Clos Floridene is a noble, somewhat reserved Graves Blanc with a couple of years left in the pocket but best now; the nose is dominated by soft white fruit such as (perhaps) lychee and sweet pear topped off with lime. Entry is equally reserved and elegant. There is a hint of menthol, grass, and stewed white fruit. Finish i... Read More

  • Chateau de France Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Yeah, this wine is no potassium cyanide, as per some remarks I made on the discussion pages, but this fine white has a slightly stringent nose - that almond of cyanide, I suppose, but this is dominated by lemon oil. On the palate, we have mature, slightly bitter sauvignon notes. Finish is medium, fresh and clean. Beautiful for the price. 90. Read More
