Seeking increased recognition for its high-quality wines, the Pessac-Leognan appellation broke away from the rest of Graves, in the Bordeaux region, in 1987.The appellation is for red and dry white wines from 8 communes immediately to the south of the City of Bordeaux. the suburbs of which encroach on the vineyards. It includes all the producers in the 1959 classification of Graves and also Haut-Brion, one of the five First Growths, The red wines are made mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon. The white wines are made primarily from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Sometimes barrel-aged and often capable of improving for years, they are absolutely worth a look for anyone who is interested in characterful wine.

Pessac-Léognan on Snooth

  • Chateau Brown Pessac-Leognan Blanc 2002

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine for £15 from the www.cellartrade.co.uk website. The Pessac-Leognan appellation was created in 1987 out of what had been the northern part of the Graves appellation and is close to the southern part of the City of Bordeaux. My bottle comes from the well known estate of Chateau Brown, consists of 70% sauvignon blanc and ... • La Tache (Romanee-Conti) or Clos de Beze (Chambertin) are likely once in a lifetime experiences - unless you have well supplied and well-heeled acquaintances.  If I can get the right vineyard, I might plug for 300 US a bottle (former) or even more for la Tache... assuming one can get it (it is unavailable in BC at the moment it seems, although I... • The reverb must has resonated in Seattle, DV.  I wasn't that lonely, actually; I had a lot of 2016 Bordeaux to keep me company (LOL).  In fact (yes, its another one!) I had two Bordeaux last night with friends... The Latour-Martillac (Pessac-Leognan) - an old holding of the venerable Kressman family (since the 1920's).  You don't hear much about... Read More

  • Chateau Latour Martillac 2016

    Snoothrank:

This wine shows deep, black cherry in the glass with excellent viscosity on the rim; bouquet is a fine admixture of blackberry (mure), cedar and bright, sweet cherry. Entry is densely packed with grainy red and black fruit such as blackberry but topped with herbs such as dill. The finish suggests vanilla-oak, but soft and already quite integra... Read More

  • There is a lot of information on this vintage available at the usual download locations - particularly if you have accounts (I avoid this in most cases as I hate advertising).  Having said this, i can say that I have not had a poor example from this Bordeaux vintage - which is either merely serendipitous or an excellent indicator of the quality ... • Chateau Ferran Blanc 2016

    Snoothrank:

The Ferran blanc seems steeped in citrus (grapefruit and lime sharpness) on the nose, and presents nicely as early season dandelion wine yellow. Entry is replete with tart gooseberry, pink grapefruit peel and a little semillon musk on the finish. Elegant for the price and a second bottle would come easy... 90. Read More

  • Well, DV, the Bordeaux Release is the largest ever, I think, with something like 241 product listings.  However, the advertisement was pretty much strictly on their internet site and at various locations set to offer the wines for sale.  To me, the whole operation is amateurish and stuck on the idea of first come, first served line-ups on the ea... • Chateau Ferran 2016

    Snoothrank:

My first tasting of wine from this estate, and the 2016 presents nicely with a deep, dark Kirsch-like cherry red robe (Petit Verdot effect?). The bouquet is of crushed small red/black fruit such as currant, blackberry and cassis. The slight medicinal entry with medium vanilla tannin overlays the plummy flavour profile. Opens up after 20 minut... Read More

  • Chateau la Garde Rouge 2016

    Snoothrank:

The 2016 Chateau La Garde is perhaps the best ever. The inky-black robe presents as a deep and substantial Pessac-Leognan. Nose is a deep cassis and blueberry with a hint of pepper. Wonderful. The entry is blackberry and vanilla, with a smooth promise of delivery in about five years. Best ever from this property. 92 Read More

  • I am currently seeking out some of the better Western Cape wines of S. Africa... for that something different.  However, tonight, after inspecting a new propoerty I purchased on Vancouver Island, I was just to thirsty to look far afield and lighted on this very underrrated wine: Chateau de France 2015.  See review, if interested, on this site.  ...
