The commune of St-Emilion, in Bordeaux, was first classified in 1955, a hundred years after the 1855 classification of the Medoc. The classification is updated every ten years and is based on tasting, which inevitably makes it controversial. The 2006 classification was recently invalidated by the courts, for example, and the 1996 one applied instead. We await 2016. In any case, wines are divided into Premier Grand Cru classe A, Premier Grand Cru classe B, and Grand Cru classe. Only Cheval Blanc  and Ch. Ausone merit the designation Premier Grand Cru classe A. Less meaningful is the term “Grand Cru,” which can be found on the labels of over a hundred different estates and is not part of the official classification.

  • Chateau Jean de Trimoulet 2010

    Snoothrank:

This very soft offering from Jean de Trimoulet is very Rive Droite... it is soft, with a scent of cherries and generic red fruit and a good tannic structure which imparts vanilla, toast, grassy herbs and slightly sour cherry notes on the finish. The wine is very slightly on the rustic side with a touch of woody grit, but reasonable value in St.... Read More

  • MJET,                 I am surprised you were disappointed with your bottle of French wine. I would regard a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru from the excellent '98 vintage to be a good bet. Mind you I have not tried that one. Do you know how it was stored since '98? Read More
