Anjou-Saumur is the large central section of the Loire Valley around the cities of Angers and Saumur.

Anjou is best known for its great Chenin Blanc appellations, particularly Savennieres and Coteaux du Layon. Rose made in this region typically has some sweetness.

Saumur is best known for its white and rose traditional-method sparkling wines. These wines can represent tremendous value. It also contains the appellation of Saumur-Champigny, which produces lovely reds from Cabernet Franc.

Plenty of very tasty red and white wine labeled simply Anjou or Saumur AC is on the market as well. The reds are typically made from Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Pineau d’Aunis playing a supporting role. The whites are typically Chenin Blanc, with perhaps a bit of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.
