Vouvray Wine

Vouvray

Vouvray is an appellation created in 1936,although there has been viticulture here for centuries for white wine from 8 communes around the village of that name in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The grape variety used is chenin blanc or pineau de Loire as it is known in this area. Vouvray can be dry (usually labeled “sec”), demi-sec, sweet, or sparkling. In cooler years, most wines made are dry, off-dry, or sparkling; in the best years, the top producers come out with what Vouvray is really known for -- the exceptional, long-lived Moelleux or Liquoreux wines. Demi-Sec Vouvray can also be excellent and ageworthy. One reason the wines often benefit from a great deal of time in bottle is the extremely high natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape. Some of the top producers include Huet, Champalou, and Pinon. Their wines are up there with the best white wines in the world, and are very different from commercial Vouvray, which is usually a simple, off-dry white wine that Read more »

  • Domaine du Clos des Aumones Vouvray France 'Sec' 2017

    Snoothrank:

This is a very good and disarming wine and while I understand the trend towards using steel tanks and looking for a more "authentic" flavor I find my self trending/tending towards a wine that has spent time in the oak. Read More

  • Last night it was Vouvray - although a slightly upscale - though popular - number from Champalou.  I am not a fan of Chenin Blanc generally, but it is an everyday wine for many - especially those examples (which can be very good if very dry) from South Africa (known traditionally as Steen).  California jug wine generally has its share of this gr... • Randy, check for Vouvray in the Total Wine French section.  However, look for the word "sec" on the label.  That will be dry.  If it is not a sec, there will be noticeable (at least) sweetness.   Read More

The Domaine de Vodanis is situated in the commune of Rochecorbon and is cultivated by SA Huet along biodynamic lines (only natural substances used in the vineyard, no chemicals or pesticides) The wines are vinified by Noel Pinguet. For a wine with 9 years of age it was tasting as fresh ...
