Côte-rôtie Wine

Cote Rotie, or the “roasted slope,” was first noticed by the Romans for its perfect exposure. In fact, it was the first place in Gaul where grape vines were planted. The schist-rich vineyards are so steep that they must be terraced.

Today, Cote Rotie produces excellent wines from Syrah. Up to 20% Viognier may be cofermented with the red grape, but this is no longer common. Marcel Guigal massively boosted Cote Rotie’s modern reputation; other outstanding producers include Rostaing and Cuilleron.

  • DV, Lynn and I managed to take a peek at Vessel this afternoon while cruising Oak Bay (sorry, I did not want to invite myself over... left you to recover from a week of work instead).  But on the little store in that quiet little commercial spot at the junction of Pandora and Fort, it is of, I would say, medium size, stock-wise, but owning a gre... • JD - you can't tell. I've done a few tastings of Cote Rotie vs Hermitage, all from the same year, six wines each, all blind. The whole point was to find the co-ferments and see if you could tell them apart from the single grape wines at ten years, and next time at twenty years. The point of the co fermentation has nothing to do with aromatics or ...
