Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Purchased this '12 while we were in Provence in 2014 so it's been stored properly. Just the slightest of bricking on the edges. More black cherry on the palate layered with cigar box, bitter chocolate all wrapped up with a good bit of acid and fine grained tannin... Read More

  • Vignobles Jerome Quiot Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Lieu-Dit les Combes d'Arnevel 2015

Considerable lime, white table grape and gooseberry on the nose with a slight golden hue in the glass. Entry is smooth and balanced - with acidic gooseberry elements, citrus (lime) and quince (or perhaps apple-pear). This is fine white wine with elegance - one you could drink all afternoon on the patio for a great price. 90. Read More
