Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape was one of the first appellations founded when that system was set up in the early 1930's.It is for red and white wines [though 95% are red]from four communes around the village of that name in the Avignon/Orange area of the southern Rhone valley where it is the best-known  and prestigious appellation. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new palace.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

Châteauneuf-du-pape on Snooth

  • I have an unopened 1966 bottle of Chateauneuf - du - pape that I recently acquired after a loved one had passed.  I was wondering what the value of this wine might be.  It is in very good condition. Read More

  • No sulfites added indeed... only, en Francais.  I am drinking a Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc from Jerome Quiot.  White CdP is not so very common (we always think of the red, Beaucastel, and the like, if we are lucky). This wine is delicious and well-priced (well under the 100 dollar mark).  See my review for further details.  As for why this wine, ... Read More

  • Vignobles Jerome Quiot Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Lieu-Dit les Combes d'Arnevel 2015

    Snoothrank:

Considerable lime, white table grape and gooseberry on the nose with a slight golden hue in the glass. Entry is smooth and balanced - with acidic gooseberry elements, citrus (lime) and quince (or perhaps apple-pear). This is fine white wine with elegance - one you could drink all afternoon on the patio for a great price. 90. Read More

  • Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Vielles Vignes 2011

    Snoothrank:

This is a kind of awkward wine. Some red berry fruit on entry. but, then, general funk. It seems to go down from there--bitterness, alcohol. Just not a friendly wine. Read More

  • I was not aware of this producer, but looked into the matter (in a cursory, lazy manner that sometimes is my unfortunate metier), and the property dates to the 18th Century, and has some Chateauneuf-du-Pape as well as the CdR you present above, EMark.  There are about 4-5 hectares in CdP.  It should be a fine little wine.Z. • Love the sweet cherry wine flavours of this grape - especially in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but also in worthy Cali and Oz wines from old vines.  I see it comes from Ojai not far from Santa Barbara; beautiful country and very nice, elegant wines - if you can get them and are selective.  I'm pretty sure you are selective, being perhaps lucky enough to... • J. V. Fleury Chateauneuf du Pape 2012

    Snoothrank:

The baby fat has gone away in this wine. 14.5% ABV and 85% Grenache. Garnet in color. The nose is light bing cherry with herbal notes. A mix of sweet and red fruits with some light tartness, some resolved tannin and a long garrique laced finish. Read More
