Mosel Wine

The Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, now called simply the Mosel, is the best-known wine-producing region in Germany. It is legendary for its Rieslings -- there is nothing quite like them in the world.

Most of the vineyards in this region are on extremely steep slopes, some as high as 70 degrees. The combination between the very cool growing climate and the excellent exposure of these sloping vineyards produces wines that retain their delicacy and razor-like acidity, even when harvested late. Though about 15% (and rising) of the wines produced are dry, the tendency in the Mosel has been to balance this intense acidity with a bit of residual sugar.

The Mosel can be divided into the Lower Mosel, the Middle Mosel, and the Saar and Ruwer. The Lower Mosel has the most unforgivingly sloping vineyards and the greatest percentage of Riesling vines. Here, blue Devonian slate, red slate, and quartzite give the wines their distinctive minerality. The Middle Mosel has the greatest number of top vineyards. The Saar and Ruwer Read more »

Mosel on Snooth

  • Had to suffer through too many mediocre wines tonight: an atrocious Nahe kerner ... place, a relatively nasty Mosel riesling Auslese, and from Mendoza a horrible throat jerking malbec following a so-so cab.The salvation, at least relatively speaking, was a merlot blend (60% merlot, 13% cab franc, 7% cab sauv, 9% malbec, 11% syrah) from Limoux (... • Dr. Loosen Riesling Spatlese Urziger Wurzgarten Mosel 2014

    Snoothrank:

This acclaimed Mittelmosel commune (Ürzig) produces a spicy, sometimes spritz-like, wine from the Grosse Lage vineyard known as Würzgarten. This wine is bursting with candied fruit on the nose... apple, lime and floss; the granny smith apple and prickly finish make for a delicious, semi-sweet treat. Excellent value and overall quality. 91. Read More

  • It was a crazy afternoon, with quite a few people in and out of the two ... ... ... from both Alsace and the Mosel. All good wines but the Batard garnered the most comments before the La Chapelle appeared. General level of revelry was pretty high, though things were a lot better-behaved than if we'd been doing it, say, at Chateau Marmont.Reall... Read More
