Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro is the DOC under which red sparkling wine is produced using the Grasparossa clone of the Lambrusco varietal, in the delineated Castelvetro zone south of Modena in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The sunny, hilly slopes here allow the Lambrusco Grasparossa to reach its highest potential. This is also the smallest of the 5 Lambrusco production zones, the others being Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, Modena and Reggiano.

For this DOC, Lambrusco Grasparossa must make up 85% of the blend, the other percentage going to Brugnolo (a.k.a. Fortana or Uva d’Oro) and/or Malbo Gentile. This is considered the most tannic of the Lambrusco DOC’s, with a dark, rich purple color and deep, fruity flavor. It is usually bottled around 10.5% ABV. This wine is a natural match for its local cuisine, but also a magnificent partner to your next takeout pizza.
For more information on the Lambrusco varietal, please see its grape page.
