Valpolicella Classico is the DOCG classification of wines produced within this specific vineyard zone in the Veneto, Italy. The name refers to both this superior status as well as defining the “classic” Valpolicella zone, which was its original boundary before it was re-zoned in 1968. The surrounding towns are Fumane, Marano and Negrar.

The wines produced here are renown for their higher quality. They’re cultivated in superior soil and vineyard conditions than the rest of the DOC, with more stringent rules in respect to yields and aging techniques. The blend is composed of primarily Corvina with smaller percentages of Molinara and Rondinella. Classico Superiore wines must be aged a minimum ABV of 11% and aged for a year prior to release.

The Classico zone also encompasses the offshoots Recioto della Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella and Valpolicella Ripasso.

Valpolicella Classico on Snooth

  • Bolla Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2017

    Snoothrank:

Clear red vino, with muted orange-bronze hues when held against a white light.....watery legs arrive on the inside of the glass after a gentle swirl. The aroma is of spicy alcohol initially, giving way to cinnamon, clove and freshly ground pepper, followed by juicy berries (cherry, blackberry, mild currant), oaked vanilla and leathery notes. T... • Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella Classico DOC 2017

    Snoothrank:

Pours a gentle rustic ruby color, has good clarity and develops sound legs after an aggressive swirl. Very fruit forward aromas of soft cherry, blended with vanilla extract, muted leather and/or tobacco leaf. Flavors that are very much akin to the aroma, with plenty of berry, soft vanilla spice, slight oak and even some dry cranberry astringen... Read More

  • Tedeschi Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2013

    Snoothrank:

With a scent of grape confit, plum and fresh dark raisons, this very dark wine is showing just a hint of "bricking" in the glass. After 60 minutes of sitting quietly in the decanter (and aerated) the wine greets the mouth with gobs of roasted coffee, plum and chewy raison; there is also a vanilla overlay on the back palate with a grainy tannin ... • Venturini Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012

    Snoothrank:

Tarry and earthy aromas with underlying red fruit notes of cranberry and cherry amidst heady spice. Juicy and plump on entry with generous black currant and blackberry fruit, tart cranberry and plum skin notes on the mid palate and a finish of dark chocolate, blueberry and a puff of smoke. Good structure and fruit. Read More
