Valdepeñas is wine region in the south of Castilla La Mancha. It is named after the ancient city, and is characterized by little rocky formations along its sweltering river valley. Hence the name, which means “Valley of Rocks.”

It was originally known for producing “Clarete,” a light red wine finished with almost a third white wine. The style is still produced, but by blending the musts instead of the finished wines. These were often stored and fermented in “tinajas,” clay pots, rather than barrels. But vinification has gone more modern now with the requisite barrels and steel casks. More modern too is the predilection for making wine in a wide range of styles from very young releases to finer, barrel aged reservas, as well as rosados. Though not as well known as wines from neighboring regions, they are often very value-driven and worth seeking out.
Much like its bigger sibling La Mancha, the main grapes grown are the red Cencibel (a.k.a. Tempranillo Read more »

  • Raices Tempranillo Crianza Valdepenas 2014

Lightly candied cherry and floral notes with a warm pie filling character with a creamy vanilla note. Soft, pleasant and red fruited on the palate with cherry, raspberry and red currant with a white blossom and vanilla notes, earthy tannins and mixed spice and a soft cherry finish. Very approachable, easy drinking and nicely fruity. 90 pts Read More

  • Anciano Reserva Valdepenas 7 Year 2007

This is a burgundy/tawny color, with coppery tones around the edge. The aroma is delightful.....initial smells of cocoa, leather, baking spice (vanilla, cinnamon is most noted), oak and fresh berry fruits. The flavors follow suit, and after a few mins of chilling, they really come out upon re-warmth.....cherry vanilla, muted cinnamon, oaked to... Read More

  • Navarro Lopez Laguna de la Nava Grand Reserva Valdepenas Cl 2006

The wine is somewhat lighter in color than your typical rioja, but perhaps that ... internet that most wines of Valdepenas are meant to drink young, so having a 7-year-old bottle might not be a prize, but this one turned out well. It's somewhat lighter, tart and modestly refreshing for a red wine, making it ideal for the summer!See my full rev... Read More
