Anderson Valley Wine

Anderson Valley AVA is located within Mendocino County in the North Coast region of California. It’s considered one of the coolest regions in the state, with dense areas of fog, cool winds and rain, with just enough sun to favor conditions for a long growing season, leading to balanced acid structure in the grapes.

Anderson Valley is named for a mid 1800s pioneer family who isolated themselves from the rest of the frontier packs and were drawn to the valley’s natural beauty, fertile grounds and abundant wildlife. Soon, other settlers, mainly the Swiss and those from the Eastern US, came to join them. Most early attempts at wine-making failed due to cold and frost conditions near the valley floor. It wasn’t until the 1890s that an influx of Italian immigrants found their to the valley and settled in the Greenwood Ridge section, which is considerably higher, sunnier and warmer than the lower parts of the valley. These immigrants are credited with starting the practice of commercial Read more »

Anderson Valley on Snooth

  • Rivers-Marie Bearwallow Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

    Snoothrank:

A Chardonnay that has, clearly, seen oak, but it is not over the top--not buttery or caramely. Initial impression is tropical fruit--pineapple, kiwi, papaya, As the wine passes back I get some stoniness. Then the acid hits and I get a suggestion of lemon. My kind of Chardonnay. Read More

  • Rhys Vineyards Bearwallow Vineyard Chardonnay 2015

    Snoothrank:

Crystal clear straw color. Stark nose suggesting granny smith apples. VERY lean under the palate. Quite tart with the slightest suggestions of apple or stone fruit. Acidity makes for a very refreshing quaff. Good wine for summer sipping. Read More

  • Rivers-Marie Bearwallow Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

    Snoothrank:

Mid-level body. Light cherry on the tip of the tongue. Some initial sulfur funk blows of pretty quickly. Baking Spice, Bubble gum on the nose. Some steeliness. Now, noticeable acid. A very unusual and changing wine. I am OK with this wine, but it doesn't blow me into the weeds. On the other hand, I am going to dedicate storage space to th... Read More

  • Theopolis Vineyards Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Unusual, almost prune color. Somewhat cloudy in the glass, and definitely appears to be somewhat light-bodied. Moderately fruity nose, Lots of red cherry on the tip of the tongue. Also some surprising astringency--that may be from acid. Very observable mineral things under the rear palate, In contrast to my visual prediction, while this is ... Read More

  • Ceritas Pinot Noir Hacienda Secoya Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Interesting wine. I see from previous notes that I had raved about this wine. This bottle, though, does not match that opinion. A very pretty bright floral nose. On the tip of the tongue, though, when I normally get fruit from just about any wine, I get no fruit, here. I get stoniness, I get savory and I get, maybe, salinity. I do get some... Read More

  • Halcon Wentzel Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

    Snoothrank:

A lot of red berry fruit on entry. Then, some very surprising, and pleasant, spiciness. Surprising, to me, tannin (for a PN). Fairly light bodied, although with an aftertaste that does linger. A very pleasant and complex wine. Read More

  • Rivers-Marie Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2016

    Snoothrank:

Something of a cherry nose. Sure enough red cherry on the tip of the tongue, but not syrupy, not fruity, not over the top. Nice, refreshing acid tartness. An unusual rear palate sensation that I can only describe as "foliage." I am not a PN guy, but this one hits the sweet spot for me. Read More

  • Rivers-Marie Chardonnay Bearwallow Vineyard 2016

    Snoothrank:

Probably, a higher acid Chardonnay than most people like, but I'm enjoying it. I do get oaky vanilly, but, no question, there is very noticeable lemon pith or, maybe, tart green apple. I might criticize that the wine does not seem to evolve as it moves back. It is what it is. As I said, I like it, but I can see why it might not appeal to all. Read More
