Monterey Wine

Monterey is an AVA within the Monterey County region, in the Central Coast of California. It runs between Monterey Bay in the north and extends as far as San Luis Obispo AVA to the south. Most of the Salinas Valley lies within it, providing a natural channel for the Bay fog and winds which lengthen the growing season and control acid balance in the grapes.

The vastness of the region lends itself to somewhat diverse growing conditions. Coastal areas are suited to cool climate varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurtztraminer while warmer sections tend toward Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Monterey is further subdivided into the following regions:
Arroyo Seco
Carmel Valley
Hames Valley
San Antionio Valley - Monterey
San Bernabe
San Lucas
Santa Lucia Highlands

Monterey on Snooth

  • Hahn Pinot Noir Monterey County 2017

    Snoothrank:

Coloration is fairly brilliant cherry/cranberry, looks to be quite clear, with rustic hues around the rim. Aromas that are fruit forward....cherry, toasty oak, tobacco leaf, wet leather, honey molasses bbq sauce richness and a muted cinnamon, nutmeg/mace & pepper spice. Flavors are pretty straight up of field berries (cherry, blueberry, raspbe... Read More

  • Jolie-Laide Rodnick Farm Melon de Bourgogne 2019

    Snoothrank:

A very fruity wine--apple, pear, kiwi, melon. Some stoniness mid-palate. Light-bodied (Well, duh.) but a surprisingly robust mouth feel. Light but detectable acidity. A very pleasant wine. An excellent summer sipper. Read More

  • Fetzer Shaly Loam Gewurztraminer 2015

    Snoothrank:

Pours out of the bottle a slightly honeyed mead sort of color....pale grassy yellow would explain it rather well.....it is clear and appears to have some effervescence based on a minute amount of suspended bubbles clinging onto the glass. The aromas are of semi sweet wildflower honey, apples/pears, muted minerality, and orchard fruit flower blo... Read More

  • Carlisle Santa Lucia Highlands Rosella's Vineyard Syrah 2014

    Snoothrank:

Dark fruit opening---blackberry, black plum. The wine enters as mellow, but it is quite spritzy on the edges of the tongue and under the mid-palate. Some dark chocolate bitter hints under the rear palate. A very enjoyable wine. Read More

  • Talbott Pinot Noir Logan Sleepy Hollow Vineyard 2016

    Snoothrank:

14.2% ABV Ruby red tinged with garnet at the edges. Medium light in weight. Pretty and well made wine. I get a strong hit of cherry cola on the first sip followed up with some sour cherry as the acid comes to life and finishes with some cranberry notes with a touch of bitterness. Read More
