Oakville Wine

Well if any AVA vies with Rutherford for the crown of King of Cabernet it would have to Oakville. Here we find the cradle of the Modern California wine industry. In 1868 a gentleman by the name of H. W. Crabb planted a vineyard, which he named To Kalon, Greek for “most Beautiful”. Saying Crabb was prescient is the under-statement of the year! The To-Kalon vineyard has been responsible for some of the most profound wines ever to emerge from Napa Valley. Long the heart of the famed Mondavi Cabernet Reserve, the vineyard’s fruit is prized to this day. Slightly cooler than Rutherford, yet warmer than Yountville, Oakville has nearly ideal conditions for viticulture. The soil here is much like that of Rutherford’s with slight differences from east to west though the alluvial deposits tend to be a bit finer here. There are gravely ridges throughout the AVA offering excellent drainage for the Valley floor. The terrain here is more varied than that of Rutherford, with vineyards creeping up the bench lands Read more »

Oakville on Snooth

  • Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Nose of dark fruit. Dark purple color. Blackberry, blueberry, currant on the tip of the tongue. Fairly "thick" mouthfeel. More "sweetness" than I normally get from CS. Some leather/tobacco under the mid-to-rear palate. Not as tannic as many Napa examples, but, still, a sturdy wine. Read More

  • Apsara Chardonnay Oakville 2016

    Snoothrank:

Pale yellow in color. Tropical fruit aroma. Tropical fruit--pineapple, guava, banana--on the tip of the tongue, then, some caramel. Observable oak, but not over the top. Some stoniness. Nice refreshing acid. Read More

  • Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Very nice wine. Dark fruitcurrants, blueberry, black plum. Some roughness mid-palate that would suggest coffee or tobacco, but, certainly, none of those flavors. Nice, side-of-the-tongue acid tartness. Firm tannin, but, again, nothing to discourage one from drinking now. Read More

  • Provenance Oakville To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet 2006

    Snoothrank:

Surprising, to me, dark fruit aromatics on the nose. Not as obvious on the tongue, but there is cassis, but less fruit and more things like unsweetened chocolate, tobacco, leather and dustiness. Some of those sensations may be coming from some still obvious tannin. This is a full-bodied wine that might be a great pairing with a hearty winter ... Read More

  • Groth Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

    Snoothrank:

Dark fruit on the nose. Very pretty maroon color in the glass. Light hit of cassis on the tip of the tongue. Some tobacco. Some still sturdy tannin. Detectable, for those of us who look for it, acid. Nice full body. Read More

  • Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Oakville 2009

    Snoothrank:

Nice wine. Not, particularly, fruit forwardsome blackberry, some anise. Then, some leather, some slate, some dust (obviously, not Rutherford Dust). A sturdy wine, but with, pretty much, resolved tannins. A little sour on the aftertaste. Read More
