Carneros Wine

Los Carneros- The first AVA one comes to as one splits off the Napa Vallejo Highway and takes route 29 towards the City of Napa from the south is Los Carneros. Reaching from close to the southern border of the county to the southwestern edge of the City, Carneros was the first AVA to be determined solely by climate. It has the unusual honor of spanning across the southern reaches of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The climate here is cool, think summer in San Francisco, and while the average rainfall is the lowest in Napa Valley it can be a humid region due the fog that rolls in off the bay. These conditions are ideal for the so-called cool climate grapes of Burgundy. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rule the roost here yielding ripe yet balanced wines with fresh acidity and a round, friendly feel. Merlot is a distant third, though the cool, crisp quality of the fruit can produce attractively elegant examples and an excellent structural component for blending. Los Carneros is a source of successful sparking Read more »

Carneros on Snooth

  • Bedrock Wine Co. T 'n' S Blocks Hudson Vyd. South Syrah 2016

    Snoothrank:

Candied fruit--blackberry, plum, citrus (lime) peel. However, the "canddied" descriptor is sufficiently offset by lively acid. A medium-bodied wine.Somewhat lean. Solid wine Read More

  • Myriad Whole Cluster las Madres Vineyard Syrah 2015

    Snoothrank:

Delightful nose of violets and berries. Quite subdued berry--blueberry, blackberry--fruit on entry. Not as tart as my previous review in 2018. On the surface this doesn't seem like a particularly sophisticated wine, but surface observations may be faulty. Mid-to-rear palate I am getting retro-nasal sensations that mimic the nose and seem like... Read More

  • Apsara Syrah Carneros las Madres Vineyard 2016

    Snoothrank:

Terrific berry--blueberry, blackberry--and stone fruit--black plum--on the introduction to the mouth, Nice tartness around the edges of the tongue. Some minerality. Some salinity. Fairly full=bodied. Terrific wine. Read More

  • Apsara Syrah las Madres Vineyard Whole Cluster 2015

    Snoothrank:

Dark plum color. "Brooding" nose of dark fruit. On the tongue, again, dark fruit, but of dried fruit without the sweetness, Savory mid-palate. Some good acid and some very notieceable tannin. An outstanding full-bodied wine. Read More

  • Apsara Syrah Carneros las Madres Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

Still an awesome wine. Beautiful, dark garnet color. Floral and fruity nose, Light fruit--red berry, stone fruit--on entry. Then, some mineral or stone. Tannin and acid are completely resolved, Long, lingering finish. This wine is probably now at peak performance. Read More

  • Provenance Beckstoffer las Amigas Vineyard Merlot 2002

    Snoothrank:

Again a wine from an estate and, so, less than optimal storage conditions. A TON of upfront red fruit defines the entire taste experience now, Slightly oxidized. There are still very noticeable tannins and acids, here, but they seem to conflict, not harmonize. I am perfectly happy with this wine as an everyday drinker, but I wish for what mi... Read More

  •  I love that there are wineries there producing relatively tiny volumes of ... low-volume producers. Carneros is down by the bay more isn't it?  Cooler there?  Yes, absolutely.  I'm not sure, the now absent OT could correct me, but I think the Las Madres Vineyard is at the extreme western edge of the Carneros AVA in Sonoma County and is, practi... • Apsara Syrah las Madres Vineyard Whole Cluster 2014

    Snoothrank:

Very similar, I see, to my previous report. Pretty--more blue than red--purple color in the glass. Bright red fruit--cranberry, plum--on the tip of the tongue. Some minerality, mid-palate. Very sedate tannin. Some "spritziness" on the tongue which I would attribute to acid. Read More
