North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Groth Sauvignon Blanc 2019

    Snoothrank:

Pale yellow color. A TON of grassiness on the nose. On the tongue, sure enough there is the grass, but, maybe, also, green bell pepper. I'm also getting melon and table grapes. But now, the overriding sensation is lemony acid. Quite refreshing. Read More

  • Markham Cellar 1879 Blend 2016

    Snoothrank:

This wine opens with a lot of red fruit. I find that a bit surprising for a Napa Valley red, but what do I know? Marginally "sweet," and quite tannic. Rough around the edges--not a particulary elegant wine--but, for $17, an absolutely terrific burger wine. Read More

  • Lagier Meredith Syrah 2012

    Snoothrank:

Nice, mid-bodied wine. Lean, tart berry fruit. Actually, quite refreshing. Those who need a calendar to decide if they want to drink a red wine--i.e., who distain red wine in the summer--should try this one. Not a big, heavy red. To me the tannin is quite sedate. On the other hand, we'll be grilling a Tri-tip, tonight, and I look forward to... Read More

  • Kreck Teldeschi Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel 2017

    Snoothrank:

Very attractive plum color. Nose of dark berries with a suggestion of green vegetable--chard or asparagus. On the tongue I get the dark fruit--blackberry, black plum--but it is very muted. Not that blast of fruit "sweetness." Very nice. Some salinity and some astringency. A very interesting mouthfeel--somewhat "thick" and viscous, Seems t... Read More

  • Mending Wall Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Dark fruit on the tongue--currant, blackberry, blueberry. Some leather and tobacco. A suggestion of salinity,. Plenty of acid and tannin forecasts excellent potential for improvement for those patient to let this wine sir for several more years. A big wine with a lengthy aftertaste. Read More

  • Jolie-Laide Pinot Gris Glen Oaks Vineyard 2019

    Snoothrank:

Very pretty pink color. Very reluctant nose. On the tongue the first thing I realize is that there is very little fruit, here, only the slightest suggestion of tartness--maybe green apple or maybe citrus, As the wine passes back there is some stoniness. Bone dry and very light-bodied. Another nice refreshing summer sipper. Read More

  • Carlisle Montafi Ranch Zinfandel 2015

    Snoothrank:

Interesting "thick" mouthfeel. Blackberry on the tip of the tongue, but, then, I get some red fruit--cranberry. This Zin is more like the rustic style that I learned on 30 years ago. A lot of fun. A full-bodied wine. Great with any kind of hearty meal. Read More

  • Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard 2008

    Snoothrank:

Murky, almost prune color. Astringent nose of dark berry. Typical CS dark berry--currant, blackberry, blueberry--fruit flavors on the tip of the tongue. However, it is fairly subtle and without that "sweet" sensation. Quite nice. Tannin is, pretty much, resolved, A touch of acidity. A full-bodied wine with a nice finish. Read More

  • Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2014

    Snoothrank:

Bright ruby red in color. Quite fruity and a bit alcoholic on the nose. Sour cherries on the palate with a medium finish. I though it was a bit simple pop and pour but developed nicely with some air showing it quality. Read More

  • Quivet Cellars Beckstoffer las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

    Snoothrank:

This is a big, powerful wine. I opens with a nice unobtrusive level of dark fruit--currant, blueberry. Then there is some steeliness, or, maybe, graphite, followed by some dustiness, Then, the tannin hits--very serious tannin, I am enjoying this wine, right now, but there is sufficient acid here to predict that several more years of storage ...
