Green Valley Wine

The Green Valley AVA is in the west corner of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, in California’s North Coast. Due to its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, it’s prone to dense fog and cool temperatures, but these factors ensure a long growing season with balanced acidity and proper ripening in the grapes.

Green Valley shares much of its early history with other parts of Sonoma and Russian River. Early plantings began in the mid 1800s with the first settlers, a fruitful period of wine-making into the 20th century, then a near collapse due to Phylloxera, the Prohibition and the Great Depression when most wineries were forced to shut down and pursue other crops.

Then a period of regrowth finally took hold starting in the 1960s and 70s with wineries established by the Dutton family, Sterling family and Rodney Strong (Iron Horse).

The region is known for its sparkling wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with still wines also Read more »

  • Little known by most wine consumers, Saint Bris is an unusual wine that seems to break the rules of tradition in Bourgogne. Most Bourgogne lovers are seduced by the beauty of barrel fermented Chardonnay from the finer AOPs of Meursault, Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet. Or the legendary Pinot Noirs of Gevrey Chambertin and Chambolle M... Read More

  • Iron Horse Vineyards Ocean Reserve Blanc de Blancs 2010

    Snoothrank:

Enjoyable bubbles from Russian River's Iron Horse. Crisp, lemon pith, good acidity, some nice biscuity/yeasty flavor and a fairly long finish. One thing a bit different is a very noticeable saltiness that comes out on the finish, not bad, just different. Read More

  • Weibel Family Gh Green Hungarian NV

    Snoothrank:

I experenced this wine in the 70's paired with a swedish meal of pork and it was amazing. I was shocked when Weibel stopped making it and the winery moved from my home town. Crisp, light, sweet, it is truly delicious. Read More

  • Special treat tonight - a very nice 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon from Moone Tsai Vineyards.  This is an $80 wine that is comparable to the Alexander Valley Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon.  I still think the Napa Valley Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon is better though.  Lots of fruit up front but structured tanins.  It has a significant kick with an alco... • Of course the headline in the paper was flooding will not end drought. I know they need something to write about but I'm tired of hearing how every inch of rain doesn't matter.
