The Columbia Valley AVA straddles both Washington and Oregon, though the majority of its wineries are on the Washington side. This vast region is home to most of the state’s prestigious subregions.

The valley benefits from a natural rain shadow from the Cascade Mountains, which limits precipitation. It is located at 46 to 47 degrees latitude - the same as Bordeaux and Burgundy - with two hour’s more of sunlight than California. These long, hot days in summer followed by cool nights ensure a long growing season and peak phenol balance in the grapes grown here. Many of the vineyards are situated on the Columbia River and its tributaries, though many require some additional irrigation due to the dry conditions. Evenings can get quite cold and air turbines are used throughout the valley to guard against frost. But the frost has other benefits as this, along with its sandy soil, repels Phylloxera. This means that the vines grown in Columbia Valley are all “pure bred&rdquo Read more »

Columbia Valley on Snooth

  • Black Sage Vineyard Merlot 2017

    Snoothrank:

Nice bold labeling to make a statement....as for the juice, well it pours a darker, more muddled version of what I'm used to seeing, with deeper purple hues around the rim and numerous oily legs form around the inside of the glass after a good swirl. Aromas that lean into currant, black fruits such as plum, blackberry and blueberry, vanilla oak... Read More

  • Dirty Laundry Vineyard Reserve Gewurztraminer 2017

    Snoothrank:

A fairly light complexion that is of light yellow/grassy coloration and is super clear! The aromas are of dry grass, mineral, perfumed flower petals, and some tropical notes such as mango, papaya and muted pineapple. The flavors are a well rounded blend of tart citrus rind, floral spiciness and juicy tropical fruits, and mineral forward acidit... Read More

  • Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars Pinot Blanc 2018

    Snoothrank:

The 2018 Pinot Blanc (a somewhat underappreciated white clone of Pinot - except in Alsace and western Germany) is made in a fashion applied to Chardonnay with gentle oak treatment. The nose is vanilla-infused sweet apple, and the entry, although softer and less dense than a Chard, has sweet water purity. About as good as it gets for this grape... Read More

  • Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars Reserve Cuvee Pinot Noir 2017

    Snoothrank:

Blue Mountain has been making fine Pinot Noir for some time now, and the 2017 Reserve Cuvee - made from an very ordinary Vendange - is nonetheless quite Burgundian translucent in the glass with a complex nose of sweet vanilla, spice, gentle fir and wild strawberry; entry carries obvious oak spice, strawberry preserve and soft tannin. Age-worthy... Read More

  • Blue Mountain Vineyards and Cellars Chardonnay 2017

    Snoothrank:

The 2017 Chardonnay (non reserve) is no ordinary Chard. This wine has structure to last, showing light yellow in the glass, with a nose of apple, vanilla (French oak), pure spring water laced with herbs. Not quite as nuanced as the reserve, but clean as a whistle on entry with white fruit and apple on the finish, and of course a hint of oak an... Read More

  • Oak Bay Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

    Snoothrank:

Pours a muddled purple/cranberry color....quite unlike anything I've seen with this varietal before! The aromas are quite intense and of deep and dark structure......heavy black currant, sultana raisin, black cherry, linseed/flax oil and oak all help one another in balancing fashion....as I warm it with my hands, I get huge whiffs of dark choco... • Clos du Soleil Fume Blanc 2017

    Snoothrank:

This Bordeaux Blanc blend (83% Sauvignon Blanc and 17% Semillon) carries a scent of lawn grass, gooseberry, kiwi and a whiff of vanilla (oak); entry is very crisp - though not unbalanced or unexpected for this region (Similkameen Valley, BC Canada), with healthy acidity, musky, grassy, grapefruit-citric, white berry flavours with a slight nut-oa... • Blue Mountain Reserve Chardonnay 2016

    Snoothrank:

Blue Mountain rarely disappoints, and when it does it is usually not their fault. This 2016 Reserve Chardonnay is a benchmark for most of the Okanagan Valley BC Canada; it has a bit more aggressive oak treatment - something like some modern Grand Cru Chablis. But in this case it works: the wine is aging in grand style with gooseberry, cooking ... Read More

  • L'Ecole No. 41 Semillon 2016

    Snoothrank:

The L'Ecole No. 41 Semillon (14% Sauvignon Blanc) carries a medium yellow colour and an inviting ginger-oak-gooseberry nose with a good dollop of lime rind. Entry is velvety-smooth, with just a hint of warmth, oaky spice overlaying s bed of gooseberry and fig. This is a very good Bordeaux-style white that recalls Hunter Valley whites from Aust... • Foxtrot the Waltz Pinot Noir 2017

    Snoothrank:

The 2017 Foxtrot Waltz is the last vintage by the Allander Family (sold in 2018 to American Douglas Barzelay et al.) although Gustav Allander remains to manage the winemaking. The robe of this wine is translucent cherry - reminiscent of a Beaune property, with an attractive strawberry confit and forest floor nose with a hint of cedar chest. Ent... Read More
