The new Southern Oregon AVA has no Pinot envy. In fact, the resident wineries of the appellation are banking on defining Southern Oregon as an alternative to the Pinot-centric Willamette Valley.

The large Southern Oregon AVA is home to a diverse mix of climates and terroir. In general, though, most vineyards in Southern Oregon benefit from significantly warmer temperatures and a much drier climate relative to their northern neighbors.

The new AVA encompasses the Applegate Valley, Umpqua Valley and Rogue Valley AVAs as well as a connecting corridor of land between the latter two regions. While these regions may not register with the average consumer outside the state, they are well known in the Oregon wine industry as a source of quality wines made from heat-seeking red grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. If Earl Jones, the petitioner of the AVA and owner of Abacela Vineyards, has his way, Tempranillo will eventually be listed among the other Iberian varietals.

  • Troon Vineyard Mt Reserve Southern Oregon 2014

    Snoothrank:

Rich, creamy vanilla aromas with dark baking spice and heady black currant notes on the nose. A bit tart on entry but still presents nice black fruit flavors of black currant and blackberry with a rich round mid palate and dark chocolate coming through towards the finish of blueberry, sour cherry and chewy tannins. Hefty and flavorful.90 pts Read More

  • Ledger David Tempranillo Rogue Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Nicely spiced clove and cinnamon aromas of cherry and cranberry. Tart and fruity palate of cherry and creamy red currant with a streak of tannin coming through on the mid palate, but the big story here is the bright bold fruit that dominates the palate through to a hot resinous finish. • Dancin Vineyards Tribute Red Blend Southern Oregon 2013

    Snoothrank:

Floral, earthy and dusty aromas with dark, brooding fruit notes of blackberry and black cherry and restrained spice. This is surprisingly juicy and zippy on entry, but finds its character towards the mid palate with more dusty, earthy fruit notes of black cherry, birch bark and a toasty oaken finish that's drying and has good length, with just a...
