  • Melville Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Sta. Rita Hills Estate 2005

Melville continues to be one of my favorite wines in the Lompoc/Santa Rita Hills area. Their wine is as good as the heralded Sea Smoke not too far away. Carrier's in my opinion is there best Pinot Noir. It has a spectatular aroma with excellent blackberry flavors. Read More

  • Qupe Central Coast Syrah 2005

One of my faves, this is the ticket if you like big fruity wines. Hints of spice and a floral aroma but otherwise a pretty soft and easy drinker. A great Syrah for under $20. Actually, it's not just Syrah, it's 84% Syrah, 6% Grenache, 4% Counoise, 3% Mourvedre and a bit of Mondeuse, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo. Read More

  • Mondavi Coastal Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

I had this wine at Maggiano's in Philly on a recommendation and I thought it was wonderful. I'm normally not a fan of really full-bodied wines, but this had a great taste to it, a wonderful aroma, and went very well with my lasagna. Read More

  • Angels Gate Winery Cabernet Franc Beamsville Bench Vqa Icewine 2004

The familiar tea leaf aroma, stronger in this wine than any others we had tried up until that point, was still discernable on the nose, along with smoke, roasted red peppers, ash, and strawberry jam. Light to medium bodied, the palate featured berry notes, pepper and an acidic, slightly bitter finish. Decent length and food friendly overtones st... Read More

  • Mark and I are currently in Napa. In between the business wheeling and dealing we're hitting the wineries at a pace. We'll write more about the trip after we're back (Mark's first post!), but listening to the tourists in the tasting rooms reminded me of an article a friend sent last week.Dried rose petals, wet wool, silex, gun flint: why do wine... • Domaine la Garrigue Vacqueyras 2004

Within 15 minutes of opening: Nose is plum and cherry along with mushrooms and wet leaves. I can actually smell the alcohol. I also think I am detecting a little "musk" in the mix. The fruit is definitely the primary component. As to taste, it is almost painful at first. All I can get is acidity and alcohol. My mouth is actually burning . . . I ... Read More

  • Palatine Hills Estate Vidal Niagara Peninsula Vqa 1998

Awesome, incredible. The acidity was racy the sugars so balanced. One note though to make is that when a sip was offered to the Chef he thought it was corked. So having already had a number of wines I took some home knowing that if this was the case I would see it more clearly in the morning. Sure enough the next day it was better with no cork t...
