  • Another great-looking Chambers Street dinner. Would go if I could...Dauvissat Irancy - a wine dinnerThe Chablis of my wine youth was mostly underripe with searing acidity, and simultaneously over-manipulated. Honestly it wasn’t always clear that it was much better than that other Chablis, the big green jug of Almaden. Then, in 1990, a friend bro... Read More

  • We've had a relationship with wine for several millennia and counting. This relationship has been documented in a number of ways, but so much has been lost to the ravages of time. Gaps in history leave wine culture open to interpretation, but with the dawn of modern media things have changed. Whether we like it or not, modern media will help us ... Read More

  • That I would like to try before I die that I have not already had? There are plenty of wines I haven't had that I'd like to have, but there are some that I've had and missed and would like to taste again. Many many years ago I met a wine collector for the first time. I'd heard of such people, but never actually met one. He insisted on showing us v... Read More

  • Well, LG, I'm afraid I can't add much, but I can speculate a bit.Since you mention the disgorgement date and not a vintage date, I would assume that your wine is non-vintage--i.e., is a blend of wines made from grapes that were not necessarily harvested iin the same year.  Non-vintage sparkling wines are not at all unusual.  Makers like to blend... • I recently acquired a Gloria Ferrer  "Brut" sparkling wine,, Freixenet,  from the Sonoma Caves. It is 3ltrs and in a wooden case. It has a disgorgement date of 7/7/1984. My questions:  Is this a good wine. Is it a valuable wine and what is the approximate value. What effect does the disgorgement date have on its quality and value. As you can tel... Read More

  • In all probability the PM is in the same state as the Lieb.  The bottles - unopened - may bring a few bucks to the avid collector, but I'm guessing probably not.  Keep a bottle of each for memories, open a bottle of each to wrinkle your nose up at and try and finally recycle the glass.Good question though - thanks for posting. • While going through my grandmother's basement, we found 2 cases of wine. The first, 1978 Liebfraumilch Qualitatswein (with black pieces floating in it and an internet search that deemed it garbage even when bottled), and the second, Paul Masson Monterey County Chardonnay 1978 (Second Bottling). I've not been able to find anything out about the l... Read More

  • Here's a thought worth discussing. Why do people buy current release wines, mostly Cali cabs and Bordeaux, that are more expensive than properly mature bottles of the same wine?Let me take a shot at this, and this is along lines similar to Outthere's response.Because it's easy. You know I'm an iconoclast, Greg.  I truly believe that many people d...
