Napa Valley Wine & Cigar was located in Bel Aire Plaza for 12 years prior to our move in Feb 2008. The shop is owned by Randy & Carrie Bowman. Carrie is a veteran in the restaurant, bar and service industry. Each year she has expanded the selection of wine, cigars and accessories to accommodate our customers. On the wine side she has added more of the well known wines as well as an excellent selection of small production and boutique wines of great character and value. Carrie tastes each of the wines, choosing those of value, those she herself likes and those that have the characteristics requested by our regular customers. As you see by our web site, we are heavy on California, Washington, Oregon and Australia. We carry few French, Italian and Spanish wines but their numbers are slowly increasing. We strive to keep our prices low and competitive so our customers have an opportunity to try some of the wines we ourselves enjoy. As you would expect, there are many wine shops here in "wine country Read more »

  • I started this article thinking of pitting Washington State Merlot, arguably the state's most successful varietal wine, against those from California, and to an extent that is what I have done, at multiple price points between $20 and $40. But this exercise turned into something a bit more interesting. It illuminated a few of the basic tenets of... Read More

  • It's not often that I have a plan. Well, a detailed plan at least.. Some sort of a plan not being a requirement for those in this business. But a detailed plan, and over-arching theme for a visit to wine country can certainly come in handy.  This month’s, or rather last month’s theme was, surprisingly enough: Zinfandel. I say surprisingly becaus... Read More

  • Turnbull should be better known that it probably is. Founded in 1979 as Johnson-Turnbull, and with an excellent location smack on highway 29 just north of Oakville, the winery and home vineyards are in the heart of the Napa Valley, surrounded by such famous names as robert Mondavi, Opus One and Cakebread. Maybe folks are just so distracted by th... Read More

  • Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most popular and widely planted red grape varietals in the world. Part of its attraction is that it has a distinctive and very recognizable taste no matter where it is grown—which is perhaps why today we can find it in just about any wine growing region which is reasonably warm. According to Jose Vouillamoz, a bo... • Being a cab lover I am hesitant to stray from what I like. On a recent occasion I had the opportunity to try a Zinfandel and to my amazement, it had some of the same attributes of the cabernets I love so well. I perused Snooth and stopped on a particular zin from Bogle vineyards. Gregory Dal Piaz gave it a nice rating and being a member of Snoot... Read More

  • Cabernet Sauvignon is often blended. This changes - and some would say completes - its distinctive profile. To showcase this iconic black grape, I wanted to pluck out varietal Cabernets. However, I most wanted to spotlight wines from Washington and some of my favorites there are Cabernet-dominated blends. So, I’ve chosen some of both. While no lo... Read More

  • It’s the holiday season and everyone is recommending Pinot Noir again. What is it with folks, do they just like to take the path of least resistance? Will there come a day when Pinot is not the end all of holiday wine recommendations? Probably not. Lambrusco and Blaufrankisch have a whole set of issues that will prevent them from ever garnering ... Read More

  • In my daily travels I pass through the Napa Valley every Monday. A few weeks ago I asked Mike Smith a question about yeast for Sauv Blanc and he invited me to stop by and check out some of his new vintage before it went into bottle shock. Today was the day so I stopped by his cellar at Envy Wines in Calistoga. One of the more personable, down to... Read More

  • After last week’s look at value-oriented Zinfandel, I was pretty excited to jump into and taste some higher end wines. I love Zinfandel’s many iterations. From the Claret styles of yore to the fruit bombs that have made bold headlines and big points over the past decade, there is a great variety of styles well suited to many cuisines. Of course,... • I'm planning on being in Napa on Wednesday the 25th and will probably visit at least two wineries while there. Anyone care to meet up, just let me know.My first priority seems to be Outpost Winery, though there are a few others I'm considering, I'll probably start at Outpost at 2pm if they can accommodate.
