The Wine Point is an independent operation that began trading at Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre in August 2004. It is owned and operated by Brendan Hilferty and his team. We pride ourselves in having extensive wine knowledge not just about our wines but of the industry in general. We love a chat, so come in a talk wine and food with us. We think of it as our own cellar door. Brendan has an impressive pedigree with over 15 years in the wine industry, as a sommelier in leading restaurants in Sydney and London, as Australia’s first “cyber sommelier” at internet pioneers Wine Planet, as a retail and marketing consultant as well as stints at wine writing, educating, judging and winemaking. He's also being an enthusiastic consumer! Our wonderful staff include the irrepressible Guy Vaillant, a stalwart of the Sydney wine scene with many years experience as a Sommelier, retailer and wine exporter. His charming service and exceptional wine knowledge make him an integral part of the team. – Description from markomkc

  • Yes the Swedish swamp witch.  But loveable, and probably correct on almost every point.  Sad that Jason Kenney is too obtuse to meet with a 16 year old who, one supposes, might have him on the carpet in pain crying "uncle!"...Z.Countdown to move: 3 days. Read More

  • I don't know how Bruce got the wines. I know that we used to drop them off at the WS offices in Manhattan. The reviewers will visit wineries, but they arrange that in various ways and I have no idea if he went out to BC or not.I do know that there's a guy who's put together about five of the wineries in BC. There's one that has a medieval castle... Read More

  • Blaufränkisch is a Cabernet lover’s best friend, but still very much its own grape. And that's an asset in today’s wine climate. Generations of wine drinkers stuck to the same old grapes - but this is an era that privileges discovery. Blaufränkisch is not new, per say, but an increasing number of Americans are gulping it down by the bottle. Plan... Read More

  • That's a great idea.  I'd be curious to hear about the results of a blind tasting.I suppose it's healthy to find the saturation point of a market.  This goes along with your comments awhile back about the wine market slowing down in the US.   Read More

  • Chateau Reynon Rouge 2016

Another so-called "petit Chateau" from Cadillac, but there is nothing "petty" about the efforts of M. Dubourdieu et famille: this deep, opaque wine from a beautiful property punches a long way above its weight; the nose is plummy (Merlot) and smoky with a hint of lignin. The mouthfeel promises several years of future aging possibilities, with a... Read More

  • Hi everybody.  I returned last Sunday from two weeks in Italy.  We flew Vancouver to Paris and spent the first day walking everywhere, basically "Paris in six hours".  Saw Palace of Versailles the next day and more walking around Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur.  Flew to Bologna that evening.  Next day we took a train to Florence and spend three days... • Le Petit Rose d'Été Sud de France Pays d'Oc 2018

This rose wine from Pays d'Oc at the price point of about 10 dollars US is an amazing value for patio fare... and perhaps a noticeably better level of ingestible. Not bitter, with a slight residual element of sweetness (not the norm from Provence or adjacent districts), pale pink in colour, and smooth - if not overly energetic on the palate (bu... Read More

  • No wine isn't going away, but DV - you associate with a rare and sophisticated group of people. Most of us are just poor proles who hang out at the local shot-and-a-beer joint, and for us, wine is either red or white and not much beyond. It is true that wine sales are fine, but his point was that on a daily basis, he sees who is buying what and h...
