  • Yes, thanks for the tips.  I actually had dinner at the 6 Mile with some friends of Lynn's (from teaching days... both are retired).  Nice place with a good beer list (no sure about the wine, though).  The off-sale liquor store adjacent to the pub I did not have time to peruse will in the near future.Your suggestion of Everything Wine was, howev... • Oh Zuf, you're conveniently close to a couple of good places.  Everything Wine on Millstream (some good stuff in the vintage room usually), Six Mile liquor store (at the Six Mile Pub) and Superstore in Langford has some good VQA stuff for great prices.  They had a couple of 2013 Road 13 "Fifth Element" for $48 total last time I was there. • And believe it or not, there is wine in south England - the Kentish Downs in particular, but elsewhere as well, with vineyards popping up in unlikely places in the same way as experienced in New England, the US Midwest, Ontario and British Columbia.  Try some bubbly if you ever get there... • Hi everybody.  I returned last Sunday from two weeks in Italy.  We flew Vancouver to Paris and spent the first day walking everywhere, basically "Paris in six hours".  Saw Palace of Versailles the next day and more walking around Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur.  Flew to Bologna that evening.  Next day we took a train to Florence and spend three days... • A couple of days ago I had the Quinta da Romaneira 2009 (Douro).  Excellent.  Had it because it was mature and bought recently as a surprise find at the John B Pub in South Coquitlam (several kilometres from our current home).  You may not hear from me much for a few days as we are in the process of finalizing the sale of our home (unless someth... • With Christmas lunch now on the radar, Snoothers who enjoy cooking are already thinking about a wine match with the inevitable smoked salmon starter. For French Sauvignon Blanc lovers Sancerre is a popular choice but how about ringing the changes this year by pulling a Sancerre lookalike off the shelf. Cheverny and Touraine Sauvignon Blanc may n... Read More

  • Departed England yesterday and we're now in Cardiff.  Found this Sicilian wine bar where the majority of the wines on offer were from the owners vineyards. Did a white and a red flight with an assortment of cheeses, bread and olive oil. A nice diversion from all the pub grub we've been eating. Was impressed enough with this cab sauv that we boug... • OK, we're going to get into some difficulties determining the difference between 'brewing' and 'fermenting'.'Rice wine' (Sake), Shaosing 'Wine'? Closer to beer techniques. Also, are Thunderbird and Night Train and Ripple 'wine'? How about sherry and madeira and port and other fortifieds?OT, you're obviously just a stick-in-the-mud Sonoma boy and... Read More

  • OK, I was getting my ear bent by an Aussie tonight over a meeting at a pub accompanied by a couple of quick beers. He was going on and on about how good eating Crocs are. Since we have an active Aussie on these boards, here's my challenge for the night:What are the best wine matches forCroc tail meat?Croc claws?Croc tongues?Blame it on the beers... Read More
