  • That's great!  I've seen it before as well.  I like crows because they actually cache their food and will carefully ensure another crow or thief is not watching where they tuck it.  Seagulls on the other hand will ferociously gulp down anything they can immediately and to hell with the consequences.  I do this at wine events.  I watch the tables... • We've had a relationship with wine for several millennia and counting. This relationship has been documented in a number of ways, but so much has been lost to the ravages of time. Gaps in history leave wine culture open to interpretation, but with the dawn of modern media things have changed. Whether we like it or not, modern media will help us ... Read More

  • Thanks all for the concern but we are fully enjoying everything so far. I'm writing up these notes after tasting hours and before or after dinner so no problem missing out on any fun. Day two was as good as day one or even better. Another great breakfast to lay in a good base, then a walk around town (didn't take very long) and then off to our f... Read More

  • Had a great first full day here in south central California. Started off with a very good breakfast at the ForFriends B&B in Santa Ynez. Too early for any of the tasting rooms to be open so we headed down to Jalama beach for some salt air and scenery. Beautiful beach with some interesting campsites and about a half dozen surfers enjoying some mo... Read More

  • Not really. Anyone can over-imbibe one night and get into trouble. Doesn't make them a thief, an alcoholic or have alcohol related issues. I think you would be surprised how many people in the wine industry have a 502 on their driving record. Read More

  • So in my line of work--some of you know that I'm a criminal defense attorney in the Bay Area--we don't often cross paths with the winemakers of the bay area.  But every now and then a case shows up in court that involves the wine world.  Two have attracted my attention this month.  The first involves Donkey and Goat, a hip winery in Berkeley tha... • Tastevins served their place back in the days before electricity, when winemakers and cellarmasters could use a thief or other to rob from the barrel and place into the shallow silver cup, and the professional eye could judge what needed to be judged by the reflection of fire-based light off the silver through the small amount of wine. Then tast... Read More

  • First thought would be storage but you were at the winery so this is likely not the cause. Cleanliness is next to Godliness when it comes to winemaking. Vessels that are not sterilized, using a thief that has not been properly cleaned, improper sulphur treatment etc will generally affect the entire barrel and not just one bottle. Hard to say wha...
