Bordeaux recommendations?

Posted by Philip James, Jun 16, 2008.

My parents are off to Bordeaux in September and they asked me to help them plan which wineries to visit.

I think they'd prefer the right bank wines (more merlot!), but other than that i dont have much advice for them. Can anyone recommend any specific chateau's that are nice to visit. They are there for 3 days and they'd prefer a mix of venues from medium to high end, but primarily I think they'd prefer the smaller family owned Chateaus.

Although the Bordelais are very good at some things, letting anyone come in to Chateau Petrus and look around is not one of them. Fortunately, there are 5,000 smaller estates eager for visitors and the region has made big steps forward in terms wine tourism.

I do hope you have tapped our mutual friends at Ch. Cadillac. It is near Fronsac on the Right Bank, and I'm sure they'll roll out the red carpet pour M. et Mme. James.

I have a few other ideas... but they only speak French.

I suggest they spend a few quid on one of these books. The maps and phone #s are really good and I am totally converted to this series having had success with the Northwest Italy edition.

Hi philip
Here is another they could try - I see they have an email address to contact re visits. Its a combination of Welsh and Kiwis who currently run it - so no problem with language, and looks to be fairly close to Cadillac - tho I've not been there myself

Thanks Tippler - will pass it on

Be careful.

Cerons is just across the Garonne river from Cadillac, but Chateau Cadillac is 60 kilometers away in Cadillac-en-Fronsadais across the Dordogne river in the Fronsac region!

If they are going to Pauillac, I would recommend Lynch-Bages - they have a great tasting room and offer some educational programs too.

Looks like they are going to see:

- Chateau Cadillac
- Haut Smith Lafite
- Chateau Palmer

they've promised a trip report - should be in by the end of the month.

(NB - It is Smith Haut Lafite)

Awesome trio... and shockingly, three Chateaux that I have visited. I predict they like Palmer the best. It is the quintessential Bdx Chateau:

Just 30 minutes away from Bordeaux, on the road leading to the Médoc vineyards, a contemporary cultural site made of glass and steel stands in a 26-hectare park: La Winery.
This is neither a conservatory nor an academy. It is a huge complex offering newcomers and wine-lovers alike a modern, accessible and personalized approach to wine.

You won't find a château or traditional winemaking facilities here. Instead you will discover a place that changes with the seasons and the events on offer, a transparent site that fits in perfectly with its natural surroundings. Welcome to La Winery…

Did you know? The Médoc is home to one of France's finest wine cellars!

The 1,000m² shop at La Winery offers a selection of 1,001 French and foreign wines. It is like a cathedral of bottles kept in an air-conditioned atmosphere, representing the best of the world's winegrowing areas and with prices ranging from €5 to almost €1000.

Thanks to the special relationship between La Winery and our partners, we can offer some absolute gems from France or further afield: wines made by young committed growers, bottles from unknown terroirs, old vintages, bottles you will not find on the traditional market, etc.

La Winery is a genuine talent spotter and will share these discoveries from its fabulous selection with you at the numerous special events and tasting sessions regularly held in the presence of winegrowers.
