Calling all Snoothers with experience in Rome--recommend a wine shop.

Posted by Richard Foxall, Dec 21, 2013.

I got some good tips for places to go when I went to Italy two summers ago, so it's back to the well.  Different request this time--very wine specific.

My nephew works and lives in Abu Dhabi with his wife, just started there this fall.  Before that, they were living about a mile from us, so they spent a lot of time with us, and also lived near a really good local wine shop as well, so they caught the bug.  Abu Dhabi is the most moderate of the Emirates, pretty much, and he's allowed to purchase wine in special ex-pat shops.  (About 75% of the residents are ex-pats, I am told.) But it goes without saying the choices are limited.

He gets lots of vacation, and he's going to Rome for Christmas.  He and his wife can each bring back four bottles of wine. Maybe it's eight each, but no matter. In any case, they want to max out their purchases with good wine at reasonable prices.  Mike M, GdP, anyone else (hey, where's Giacomo these days?), any suggestions?  Sadly, he's not going to Stresa, where I'd have one recommendation and one only.

So, any recs for good wine shops in Rome?  Let's have 'em!

I'm afraid I can't be of much help this time. My best memory of buying wine in Rome was wandering around looking for anything better than that bottle of 6 euro Montepulciano that had been sitting above the pizza oven. (And ending up with the 6 euro bottle of Montepulciano.)

I did remember a shop near our hotel that made a favorable impression. I was able to use the miracle of Google maps and figure out it's Vino Vip, which is a small chain, still family owned, with a few locations in Rome and one outside of it.  But I was hoping to find the Astor Place or Chambers Street of Rome.  Still, Vino Vip is going to be a lot better than his choices in Abu Dhabi.

My next trip to Italy will probably miss Rome completely.  More likely to fly into Milan and go through Piedmont, and I won't be going to wine shops...I expect to be worn out by tasting at wineries.

But maybe the question was, when am I going to Abu Dhabi?  That's tougher.  Very limited periods of time when it's not beastly hot.
