Chateau Montelena Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Posted by mbugbee, Oct 18, 2009.
Details for Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley the Montelena Estate

Does anyone have a recommendation on this wine? I've found it on sale for about half price but have never tried it so I'm unsure if it's worth jumping on.

Thanks,

Morgan

Personally, I would buy more of the Montebello than this, but this also is a very good wine that will be good now yet also get better with years of cellaring.

Some reviews from non-Snooth sources:

A Snooth article that covers an older Montelena vintage (as well as another older Montebello):

And a Snooth forum post that also covers a couple of Montelena vintages from the '90s:

Thanks, again dmcker. I'll go for the Ridge for now and hold off on the Montelena until my next trip to Napa when I can try first.

This is, in effect, their reserve bottling. You can buy their cheaper version ('Napa' or something like that) for a much lower price. It's still a good wine, and worth a try.

Montelena is pretty much second only to Monte Bello. I too would buy the Ridge first, and more of it, but it is a different wine. It's tough to compare that opulent Napa Valley fruit to the detail of Santa Cruz.

Thanks, Greg. I put in my order for the 2005 Monte Bello last night. Saw your article about the 1994 Monte Bello and was able to find another good online deal for the '94, so I might try and pick some of that up soon, too. Then, I'll go for the Montelena. It was a hard call for me, as the Napa Cabs were the first wines I learned to appreciate but have been curious about the Monte Bello for some time.

Well The Monte Bello can be simply amazing. The Montelena is almost right there but it is more hedonistic. I do like them both. If you have a good price on the 94 and can be sure of the provenance, it's a superb buy to my mind.

I can't speak for the Ridge, having never tried it, but when I was at Montelena in September, the estate cab was stellar! Might I inquire how you found it so cheap and where?

The Montelena was on sale at a local shop here in LA - Le Petit Vendome (http://www.lepetitvendome.com/). The Pasadena branch to be exact. I believe the sale was only for last week but check with Tom Snowbeck to be sure.
