Chilean Charm

Posted by guest, Oct 10, 2008.

For this week's Wine and Music pairing, I have included two Chilean products that go fantastically together and truly demonstrate the potency of regional pairing. Chile is also the home of Aurelio Montes , owner of Vina Montes   who plays monastic chants to his wines, and who commissioned the recently published Heriot Watt study   which proves that music can enhance the taste of wine.

Root 1 is made from ungrafted rootstocks that date back to the earliest days of Chilean grape cultivation (approximately 500 years). Jose Antonio Escobar is a classically trained guitar player and performer from Chile who has been won more then 15 of the world's guitar playing competitions. As with this great and inviting Chilean wine, Escobar’s album titled Guitar Music of Chile is an authentic and momorable representation of what the region has to offer.

Music Style : Classical Guitar
Music Region : Santiago, Chile
Music Year : 2008
Music Label : Naxos
Music Link : Jose Antonio Escobar
Music Description : José Antonio Escobar is a fabulous guitarist who was born in Santiago Chile, and graduated with the highest honors from University of Chile. He has toured numerous cities throughout Europe, North, Central and South America, as well as the Asia/Pacific region, Middle East and North Africa. Check him out on YouTube - his poise, and control of the guitar is rather amazing stuff.

The track included with this pairing is called “Euclidica” and is based on the national dance of Chile called the Cueca.

Wine Style : Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine Region : Colchagua Valley, Chile
Wine Year : 2006
Wine Label : Root 1
Wine Link : Root 1
Wine Description:  This is a delicious red wine with delicate notes of mocha and chocolate. Root: 1 is known for its elegant, lush, ripe fruit flavors and its original Chilean rootstocks. Felipe Tosso is the driving force behind the winery's excellence and, similar to Jose Antonio Escobar, graduated from the University of Chile. Tosso then moved on to Concha y Toro   where he quickly rose to be the chief winemaker before heading off to start his own brand.
