Harvest 2016

Posted by JonDerry, Aug 18, 2016.

They've had a hell of a time with it in Burgundy, like a 50-90% lost vintage. Unsure on quality, but it's dubious.

What's going on in Napa/Sonoma? I hear Halcon Alturas is a ways away from ripening, but the harvest of whites has been in full effect. When should the Cabernet, and other reds be "ready"?

Let's pick now (or soon) I say!

Floods and frost have dampened Burgundy's year (above) in 2016.

Southern California/Mexico harvest already in full effect.

In South Africa, Vintners on the cape dealt with torrid heat, drought, wildfires, and more in '16.

Napa Cab is about 6 to 8 weeks out depending on the winemaker. My StepSon said J Vineyards just started picking for sparkling last week. We are a good three to four weeks out then on RRV PN. Paul said. Halcon just started verasion this week. Bedrock picked Compagni Portis today. The Custom Crush at Envy/Carter is gearing up for harvest there to begin the week after Memorial Day. Sauv Blanc,  Semillon, Chardonnay etc with PN then Napa Reds to follow. Should be done processing fruit by Halloween.

Found it interesting to see on my Facebook feed, one of the main staff of Flatiron NYC "knee deep" in Neyers Carignan...

Ummm, you're talking about last vintage, right? Still wintertime there now. And where, specifically, is being discussed? It's a big country. Not like talking Burgundy or even Sonoma.

Burgundy's had more than one bad year in the last several. Serious rot and other issues not so long ago even in DRC vineyards. Still a ways away from final call on this year's vintage, anyway. Those crafty Gauls have pulled things out of the fire before. And really, don't expect to see lower prices. Marketeers are warming up their rationales...  ;-(

You are very correct - look at what happened when the hail went through - small crop, big prices.

Speaking of hail, things aren't looking good in parts of Languedoc, particularly north of Montpelier. Hailstone golf, anyone?

Supposedly worst hail in living memory, and that was a 92yr old speaking. Some growers may have lost their entire crop. The hail may have damaged up to 60% of the 2016 crop on average in the area.

"Jérôme Despey, head of the chamber of agriculture in the Hérault region of Languedoc, said there were ‘few words’ to describe the situation."

RRV - Spoke with Chuck Giovanetti yesterday regarding his 100+ year old mixed blacks vineyard in the Olivet/Laguna area. He said the season is going on uneventful. He's dropping fruit today. Expects a mid-October pick.

Well if you'd typed an 'L' instead of an 'M'... or was it the hail hitting the keyboard?  ;-)

It's pretty incredible the gaps in Northern California between first pick and last pick, red or white. But let's just focus on red, some is already picked here in mid August and it will continue on into October? You have your 20+ Brix faction, and your 27+

You have your central valley fruit and you have your coastal fruit as well.

No big secret that I was seduced by a well-known Snooth poster into the Myriad Cellars Cheerleaders Club.  Again, thank you, well-known Snooth poster.  I found an e-mail from Myriad on the 2016 harves, in my mailbox, this morning:

Ready. Set. Harvest 2016!

Myriad Cellars harvest has begun! At first light of morning daybreak, our eager harvest crews swiftly cut away ripened clusters of Pinot Noir grapes from our Sonoma Coast Sangiacomo Vineyard.  At the same time, our Tofanelli Vineyard crews (along with a bit of help from Riley our winery dog) energetically harvested 2.5 tons of Old Vine Semillon. This marks our second harvest in a row to begin with Red and White grapes picked on the same day! It is our earliest red grape harvest on record as the Pinot is slated for Rose' coming in at twenty-one brix.

Today means the beginning of many long and rewarding days to come. Sauvignon Blanc is just around the corner, and then the flood gates open and Cabernet mayhem begins. Three new open top tanks, seven new interns and a solar system at the winery are welcome additions and will help nicely this year.

I assume that the Pinot Noir is for the Ancillary label.  Is that the case well-know Snooth poster? Also, is it a requirement of all wineries, now, that they have a winery dog?

Yes, good to hear they are starting to pick Pinot at least. Nice to get a gauge on current PN Brix levels, and would think a Rose might go over well as a member of the Mike Smith portfolio.

Perhaps my Neyers post above is bound for Rose as well, or just a much warmer site.

That Rosé came in at 21 brix. Happy to see Mike making a pink wine, a real rosé as he told me. Dava and I enjoy a lean tart Rosé.
