I'm 100pts on that!

Congratulations to Mike Smith! Parker finally recognizes talent.

  • 2012 Carter Cellars 'G. T. O.' - 100
  • 2012 Myriad Beckstoffer Dr Crane Reserve "Elysian" - 99
  • 2012 Myriad Beckstoffer GIII - 97
  • 2012 Myriad Beckstoffer Dr Cane - 96+
  • 2012 Myriad Three Twins - 95
  • 2012 Quivet Las Piedras - 95
  • 2013 Myriad Dr Crane and Dr Crane Elysian both (97-100 pts)

Tasted the Carter O.G. and Three Twins yesterday when I was at the winery for a visit along with the '12 Quivet Pellet and '12 Carter To Kalon Grand Daddy as well as '13 Ancillary Sun Chase and Sangiacomo Pinots. Nice mid-day diversion from the sales route. Such a talent, it's a wonder it took so long.

No doubt he has a knack for Cab, but at those prices, I'll settle for his Syrahs.  He's no slouch there, either.

Congrats to Mike, well deserved!

Very interesting.  My roommate mentioned this to me, last night.  Congratulations to Mike Smith.

Thanks for tipping me on M. Smith's abilities, OT.  I verified your opinion of Myriad Syrah and applied for the mailing list, last spring.  Happy to report that some of the CS examples you cite above are scheduled to arrive here in the IE in about 2 weeks.  It looks like next year I'm going to have to dig deeper if I want any Myriad/Quivet. Expecting the Ancillary offer next week or the week after.  Have you tasted the Patine Sun Chase?  That one was not included in the offer where I bought the Gap's Crown.  I'm not on the list for Carter.

Speaking of which, am I correct in assuming that "GTO" does not stand for "Gran Turismo Omologato?"

Wow.  The GTO magnum is $600.  I would love to taste this wine someday.

But what does 100 points actually mean... other than to a third rate lawyer turned measuring rod?  Well, I have a good idea from studying that erstwhile pettifogger, but his palate probably diverges from more than a few of yours.

Still, it is nice to receive recognition for the hard, hard work it takes to achieve a delicious food product, so congratulations for that are probably due.  Sales should improve, at least.

But what does 100 points actually mean

Seriously? I won't say what I think about the question but I'll elaborate on it's meaning. What it means to the winemaker who is trying to sell his wine and himself to a world inundated with wine labels and marketing $ is immeasurable. It's a level of validation that comes to maybe .05% of all winemakers. It's also akin to a hall pass in bad vintages. It's huge if it happens to you and your business. Whether you like it or not Robert Parker  scores move the market. He's one of the top 3 wine critics in the World.

Does an actor who wins an Academy Award think, "the judges tastes don't align with mine. My award is meaningless."? Uh, I don't think so.

And who would be the other two at this level?

I'm not quantifying a level but as far as impact on the market I would say Parker, Tanzer and Galloni pull the most weight with Parker being #1. Perhaps a nod to Laube but I don't consider him in the same league as the other 3.

So, the meaning of "GTO" is a complete mystery.

Mr. Outhere, your assignment, should you chose to accept it, is to determine the meaning of GTO, publish your findings on the Snooth Forum and expose Carter's true meaning to the wine drinking public.

As usual, if your or any of your IMF team are exposed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your mission.

Good luck, Outthere.

Since I've just blabbed your instructions all over the internet, there is no reasong for your computer to self-destruct.

Mark, it sounds as if you've been reading too much WB lately ; )

I haven't seen Parker mentioned in my circles in a while, but that's perhaps because I'm moving in the outskirts and don't think points really mean anything anyway let alone from Parker these days.

I recognize his status and his accomplishments, but nowadays he's not who I look to for wine advice. :/
