I am looking at this wine for my husband's 40th is rated highly by snooth (4) and everything I read about 1973 vintage points to California and Cabernet...

Any opinions about his wine or should I forget about 1973 altogether?

Getting your hands on a wine this old is tough, but those Martinis were, before Mondavi, one of the big 4.  (Along with Beaulieu, Charles Krug, and Inglenook).  Places to look are reputable resellers who buy cellars from collectors.  Good sources include BPWines, Benchmark Wine Group, Hart Davis Hart, Rare Wine Company, Chambers Street and K&L, which now does auctions.  I think Winebid might also be an alternative--they currently have a BV Georges de la Tour for a mere $115.  I probably missed a few sites, but those are my go-tos..

I think that BV is a good bet, unless you are dead set on the Martini.  Good luck and please tell us what you finally chose.  Your fellow snoothers seriously geek out on older wines!
